Yeah much of it is certainly an acquired taste, but Silver Machine seems a bit more accessible for the masses. I was really into their early space rock stuff, for me their LP In Search of Space is the best example of this genre and saw them in Glasgow in 1972. fantastic gig. I had the Silver Machine single and played it thousands of times also had their next single Urban Guerilla which was later withdrawn due to the troubles in Ireland. Because it's an amazing song (an all-time favourite of mine), at first the goofy sound effects makes it a bit funny, but at the end you genuinely feel sad for the girl.
