Onto the skateboard park now, and I'm watching a heat with 6 girls with an average age of 13.8. (I did the maths). What the actual fuck? Oldest is 19, the youngest is an 11-year-old Chinese girl, who was born on the penultimate day of the London 2012 Olympics.

The youngest ever Olympian was also 11, yet that was almost 100 years ago, so it’s not a new phenomenon. I think it was in the synchro chimney sweep event.

Sky Brown nails all 3 runs in the final, improving each time and earns a(nother) bronze medal having had MCL surgery earlier this year and a dislocated shoulder last week. Fair play, girl, fair play.

Great job! At 16, Sky can retire very proud of herself.

Assuming she'll go on to LA 2028 for (at least) one more rodeo. Especially since she lives in LA half the year. She might also fancy giving the surfing a go if the schedule allows in 4 years' time. Less painful when you fall off too, I'd imagine. She was interested in doing it in Paris I think, but holding the surfing in Tahiti was a bit of a problem...

That might be the greatest race I've ever seen.

Holy mother of Fuck that 1500m was exciting! The extra delight Kerr will have from beating Ingebrigtsen will outweigh that of getting a Silver medal. Where the fuck did the American pair come from??

It reminded me of the first major clash between Coe and Ovett in the 800m at the 1978 European Championships, where they psyched each other out and let no-hoper Olaf Beyer sneak through for the win.

Another iffy boxing decision. It’s why I’m not keen on any sport where it’s decided by people who aren’t even taking part, from skateboarding to dressage to gymnastics. I imagine this must be what watching Eurovision is like.

He accepted it with good grace, though.

Boxing is by far the worse.

I give in, I have to ask.

What's in those boxes they give the medallists?  Chocolates? Joss sticks?  A set of dominoes?

Posters. Trimmed with the colour of medal they receive.

They also get a mascot, also suitably coloured.

By "lost" you mean "finished one place outside the qualifying positions".

Hard to argue as a GB Boxing team in their post-Games review that they've been on the end of at least 5 shit decisions that have cost us medals, even though that's exactly what's happened. No way the Mexican won that fight.

I mean, on one hand, I'm saying nonsense, but when we're talking about 5 thousandths of a second, maybe there's something to this? Any sciencey Deathlisters want to comment?

I mean, on one hand, I'm saying nonsense, but when we're talking about 5 thousandths of a second, maybe there's something to this? Any sciencey Deathlisters want to comment?

Understanding the Problem:

  • We need to find the time taken for sound to travel from lane 1 to lane 9 on an athletics track.
  • We'll assume the starting gun is fired at the beginning of lane 1.

Key Information:

  • Speed of sound: Approximately 343 meters per second in air at room temperature.
  • Distance between lanes: Typically, 1 meter.
  • Number of lanes to consider: 8 (from lane 1 to lane 9).

Calculation:

  1. Total distance: 8 lanes * 1 meter/lane = 8 meters.
  2. Time taken: Distance / Speed = 8 meters / 343 meters/second ≈ 0.0233 seconds.

Therefore, it would take approximately 0.0233 seconds for the sound of the starting gun to travel from lane 1 to lane 9.

Note:

  • This is a very simplified calculation and assumes ideal conditions. Factors like temperature, humidity, and wind can affect the speed of sound.
  • The actual perception of the sound by athletes might be influenced by other factors, such as the angle of the sound waves, noise levels, and individual hearing abilities.

It took me a little over 0.005 of a second to stuff your query into some AI which then came up with a far better answer than I did using my fingers and limited mental capacity. It was an interesting question to be sure. And yes, it would make a difference by the look of it.
