Who Should Be On The Deathlist 2025?

Recommended Posts

Going through the names suggested here:

Kinsella for some reason doesn't feel like a "traditionally famous" celebrity to me, but she is pretty fucking famous to the extent I've seen her books in supermarkets here.

Violeta Chamorro has been very close to death for a very long time but feels like someone the DL would never pick. (Manmohan Singh is another. I have more hopes with Mahathir, although that time might've passed already too)

Ditka, Mujica, Plowright, Goodyear, Sir John Williams, Hedren, Antonia Fraser, Johnnie Walker, Richard Wilson all feel like very good bets.

Disagree on Giorgio Armani and Mamie Van Doren, as far as I know they're both in great health. Bruce Willis feels like an initially "overhyped" pick that'll drag on for much longer than anyone thought, the same for Paul Biya unfortunately.

There are 2 names I won`t reveal as have been told in confidence by those close to them. But will give some hints

1) A former Cabinet minister under Margaret Thatcher who has Alzheimer`s that hasn`t been disclosed. The man in question when I saw him last year at a private event looked ok and good for his age but didnt say much (although I didnt get a chance to speak to him)

2)An actress best known for working at Granada and ITV but has worked on a few notable BBC productions as well.Has starred in soap operas and sitcoms as well as a range of TV dramas. and starred in a fair few films I was told several years ago she was in a care home with severe Alzheimer's and regularly thought she was still on set at Granada when roaming around the facility. This has never been disclosed publicly either.

Second is more of a household name than the first but both will widely obit when they go.

Madge Hindle?

Suffers from dementia and fits your criteria. See screenshot from her daughters FB page.

So if it is Hindle, who lives in Yorkshire, we're looking for an ex Thatcher cabinet minister who lives in Yorkshire.

Stop forward Michael Jopling, who lives in Thirsk. If he looks good for his age, which is 94, that's our man.

All the other living cabinet members live elsewhere or are in good health.

I certainly think Michael Eavis needs to be put on deathlist watch. When Coldplay was on, they put a camera on him looking miserable in a wheelchair.

I suppose there is no chance that Ed Sheeran and Paul McCartney could go on the list?

I’d be miserable watching Coldplay too!

I've been allowed to see the first draft of the 2025 list. Some sensible picks ruined by the wacky choice of Jimmy Carter.

No, but she's old and wrinkly and crinkly and smells.

Aussie acting legend Jack Thompson is worth a consideration imo.

He's been being kept alive by thrice weekly dialysis for the past few years after kidney failure due to cancer. 85 next year and is looking increasingly ancient.

Cindy Birdsong may also be worth a shot. Turning 86 next year, suffered multiple debilitating strokes in recent years (which left her unable to communicate and now she must be fed through feeding tubes) and now lives in a nursing facility. Doesn't seem like a someone who will hang on for long.

I read an oral history on girl groups earlier this year, mostly collated from interviews conducted 4-5 years ago. Sarah Dash had mentioned how Birdsong was very poorly even back then yet Dash died a year later while Birdsong hangs on. Practically the girl group Jimmy Carter.

Isn't it time for "pancreatic cancer since about 1915" sufferer Chris Rea to become a permanent fixture in the 40s of the DL?

Robert Redford is another name I'd throw out there. Retired in the last couple of years, approaching ninety, definitely famous enough, and declining healthwise if photos from 2022 are anything to go by. He didn't exactly look on his deathbed then, mind, but it has been two years and he's not getting any younger, either. Picking random, famous, old people has clearly not proved a winning formula this year, so I won't be shocked if he is passed over once again, but he's still a name to keep an eye on going forward and I wouldn't object to his inclusion next year.

Here's Redford from this September. I don't think he's declined much for 88. Probably more on the radar for the 2027 DeathList.

Thanks, Tracy. I hadn't seen that. I take back what I said, the man seems in no danger.

Thank Goodness because he was going to be a cut for me next year, and I have no room in the inn for him on my list.

I have some suggestions for the 2024 immortals list.

1. Kong Nay: Cambodian musician. He was apparently "living out the final days of his life"... 1 year ago. Diabetes complications, blood pressure issues, lung failure, and somehow still alive.

2. Roman Kostomarov: Russian ice dancer. Allegedly suffered from cerebral hemorrhage, oedema, meningitis, two strokes, blood infection. He was also on life support due to complications from pneumonia and in a coma a few months ago. Apparently, he needs a few amputations too.

3. Edmund White: American writer. He revealed he was HIV-positive in 1985, and in 2012, he suffered two strokes AND a heart attack within the span of a few months.

4. Ranulph Fiennes: British explorer. He suffered two heart attacks, underwent a double heart bypass, and survived cancer. He also has diabetes.

Quote tweeted from The Immortals thread. A name I want to bring back into discussion: Edmund White (wiki).

When I first joined the forum in 2008 he was being hotly debated, owing to a series of health problems. As the post above says, he suffered two strokes and a heart attack in a matter of months in 2012, though he's had more than that I believe.

He's in the "how the fuck is he still breathing?!" bracket for me.

85 in January and morbidly obese. Looked pretty awful in this 2020 pic. Last publication was in 2023, has since gone quiet.
