Pope John Paul

Recommended Posts

Well, there's a suprise.  PapaRatzi moving quickly to satisfy the crowds by starting the process to make JPII a saint.  This could turn into a race between JPII and Mother Teresa...

I am so surprised and glad to see you back here after what seems an unbearable absence that I can't even figure if you are being sarcastic or truly surprised by Johnny's endeavors. Maybe there can be a Double Sainting ceremony.

By the way, where have you been?

Pope JPII on the move

Isn't Mother T already a Saint? If not, she's sure to beat JP2 as she has a few years headstart

I think there's been a mistake ... the Pope seems to be un-dead. The Vatican is looking for evidence of miracles performed AFTER his death. Apparently this is part of the beatification process. Do people REALLY believe all this twaddle in the 21st century?! :D

A headline I spotted somewhere (or made up - I can't remember):

"Vatican regrets triple-coffin plan after pope fails to escape within three days"

By the way there's a whole dead pope section at My Webpage

Doesn't he have a triple coffin to slow down decomposition?

It probably helps, but according to this site,

Is the pope's coffin always made of cypress?

In fact, three coffins are used. The innermost coffin is made of cypress to signify the pope's

humanity. Before burial, the cypress coffin is sealed in an 800-pound lead coffin which bears a

skull and crossbones. The outermost coffin is made of elm to symbolize the great dignity of the

pope. Both the lead and elm coffins bear bronze plaques with the name of the pope and the

significant dates of his life.

For some more info and discussion on decomposition, look here.

This reminds me a bit of the Emlyn Hughes thread.

Even though he's made a lifetime of appearences on

the DL and he was one of the most known\biggest

canidates the DL has ever had i wonder what all

the discussion is about "isen't he dead?" This is infact

the 680th post on Pope John Paul and i must admit he

has had some legacy on the DL but his legacy has ended

and i think it is time to move on. ;)

While I can see the morbid interest of this website: it is an unvoidable fact that this thread with its comments pertaining to Pope John Paul II are utterly and inextricably disgusting.

You write that as if there's something wrong with that. ;)

Ah, that explains why this thread's still hanging around...

You can only have a legacy if you're dead. Catholics seem to believe he isn't dead because they pray to him.

But I read that the Catholic Church does not declare an occurrence miraculous until every natural explanation is exhausted.

Surely some contradiction here?

Contradictions? Within a religion? Surely not.

Rufus: I'm telling you, man, this ceremony is a big mistake.

Cardinal Glick: The Catholic Church does not make mistakes.

Rufus: Please. What about the Church's silent consent to the slave trade?

Bethany: And its platform of noninvolvement during the Holocaust?

Cardinal Glick: All right, mistakes were made.

Sorry, couldn't help myself. ;)

Watch the movie Dogma (1999) for many of these jokes.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when the Pope has Kurt Waldheim over for a few drinks, dinner and a nice long chat about old army days.

Yes, otherwise it would say "I'd have loved to have been a fly on the wall...". That and I don't think John Paul 2 was ever in the German armed forces.

Maybe he is trying to refer to Kurt Waldheim's demise...

As saying he would love to see Kurt once he is no longer living

with Pope John Paul eating and drinking and discussing old army

days, maybe in a fancy restraunt in heaven? Why i don't know.

But i'am not so sure of the whereabouts of Waldheim's

lifetime. When he finally does croak i'am not so sure

it will be heaven where he will be heading.

I'm sorry if I've made this a bit hard to follow.

The Pope, Benedict 16, not the last/dead/old Pope, was a member of the Hitler Youth. The still living Kurt Waldheim was member of the German armed forces with a questionable service record.

While not unthinkable that the Pope would have the former United Nations Secretary General over for dinner, in my opinion it would be highly unlikely that their war service records would be a welcome topic of conversation over sauerkraut and sausages. It might cause an embarrassing moment or a stunned silence followed by a swift change in the topic of conversation.

I thought it to be an amusing situation, much like Michael Palin singing 'I'm a lumberjack'. While the lovable Mr Palin is not now, nor never has been a lumberjack, the song is not ruined for me knowing he's just pretending.

Obviously I was wrong.

Pope John Paul 2 and Pope Benedict 16 are about the same age (John Paul being slightly older)

When Hitlers Germany invaded Poland John Paul had to stop school to hide from the German troops he was about 7 at the time

Pope Benedict 16 was in the Hitler youth a few years later

Okay, just a couple of points.

JPII was born 18th May 1920. When Germany invaded Poland on 1st September 1939, he was 19, not 7. He was at University until the Germans closed it, and then forced to work as a messenger and labourer, before entering seminary in 1942.

Benedict (PapaRatzi to his media friends  ) was born 16th April 1927 (so 7 years younger then JPII). He was a member of the Hitler Youth from 1941 - 1943 (it being a legal requirement to join) although he claims he refused to attend meetings and rallies. In 1943 he was dratfed into an anti-aircraft unit (flak unit) along with many of his classmates. He was later drafted into the infantry, from where he apparently deserted in early 1945. He was briefly held in a prisoner of war camp, and released June 1945.

Hope this helps clarify, but no doubt it will start some more discussions :P

I think you need to check your sources Deadornot. JPII was born in 1920 and Germany invaded Poland in 1939.

Too slow as usual!! (I mean me, not deadornot)
