World War I Veteran(s)

Harry Patch becomes a supercentenarian. Unlike Henry, he eschews the 'live fast, die old' method of wine, women and song, but each to their own.

Happy Birthday, Harry.

Yes, well done, Harry. Hang on a few more years and you'll probably break the record. Love and respect, David, Glasgow.

Continuing today's trend of me posting unverifiable news (unless you can read this link), the last central powers WWI veteran, Franz Künstler is in hospital with a broken hip and an intestinal obstruction, neither of which is conducive to long life in a 107-year-old. Given how wide the international coverage was for Erich Kästner, I suspect that his status as the last Central Powers veteran will produce a (delayed) reaction good enough for most DPs, including Handy's upcoming one.

Well, Kastner should've been proud. He broke the all - time marriage record. 75 years.

France has found another veteran, Fernad Goux, who is apparently not good enough to be counted officially by their government because he served less than 90 days.

Francesco Domenico Chiarello, the second-to-last Italian veteran, has died. That leaves Delfino Borroni as the last surviving WWI veteran from that country.

Well, they might have found another Tommy...........

From what I understand, his status is plausible, but not yet confirmed. There's a brief discussion about it here. I should point out that Britain is (with six!) the only remaining nation to have more than one verified surviving veteran.

Only 8 months late, Phantom -

In the true spirit of December deathpooling, Coffey has up and died before December 31st and saved everyone the trouble of seeking a BBC obit.

It was Google news alerts, but the error was with the mail server at work. It suddenly started spewing emails out that were months old.

And, now you've announced it, how do you propose to make it look like an accident? Have you any date in mind?

Don't worry about the accident, just let me get some CPDP points on the board, very welcome after last year's woeful performance.

"Bill Stone came home to his wife and family

After serving in the conflict overseas.

And the time that he served had shattered all his nerves

and left a piece of shrapnel in his knee."

Next few lines anyone?

And Bill Stone's wife came over and said,

"What was it like then Bill?"

And Bill said, "what? oh the war you mean?

It was awful, guns and bombs and most of it was no fun at all.

And I've got this bloody bit of shrapnel in me knee"

who's next?

who's next?

I'm just another heart in need of rescue,

Waitin' on love's sweet charity

An' I'm gonna hold on

For the rest of my days,

Cos I know what it means

To walk along the lonely street of dreams

With a piece of forkin' shrapnel in me knee.

Hellair, your BBC Four correspondent here.

From November 3rd-11th, the channel is showing a series of programmes to mark the 90th anniversary of the armistice, including one about Andrew Motion's poem for Harry Patch (from March this year) on Nov 3rd, the film Regeneration and a David Reynolds documentary re-evaluating the events behind the armistice.

This has been a DeathList public service announcement.
