I do believe The Independent are actually correct.

If you look at the history of her Wiki page, there was some edit warring in the past over her year of birth, before 1926 just became "accepted".

There are no birth records for her on Ancestry, as she is Greek, but there are Passenger and Crew Lists that record her from November 1962 and December 1962.

They both state that Irene Papas / Irene Lelekou Papa was born on 3 September 1929...

Probably the NY Times. When you go through their archives you find 1000s of historical articles loaded with incorrect ages, DOBs etc. including a lot of obituaries.

For what it's worth, a Greek Wikipedia user claims he pulled this from the (now defunct) public Greece records. This also says 1929 is her year of birth, but it could easily have been edited.

That's true, also Shirley MacLaine had a very minor role in it. Though I think they were referring to the "Ocean's 11" i.e. the group who perform the heist.

Edit: I see THR talked to Silva's son, so I'm inclined to say they're correct!

I'm sure THR is right. There's this record on Familytreenow:

Variety also seems a little confused. They say he was 94, which would support 1928, but they also say he died on Wednesday, so he would have been 93. THR's article gives a full DOB and correctly indicates that he died Wednesday before his birthday. Given that, I conclude that they did their research, and Variety didn't. 1926 it is IMO.

 

EDIT: New York Times obituary gives his DOB as September 23, 1926, and mentions the erroneous 1928 date. Variety has also updated their article to say 95.
