I hear that Nancy Reagan may be a good pick in the near future. Anyone have any thoughts?

I've got loads of thoughts, not too many about ex-first ladies mind. Tell us Deadsox, what is the source of the information about Nancy?

And for your next trick, which of those first ladies outlived their respective husbands and which died while their husbands were still in office?

Some of the above didn't even make it to the White House

Rachel Donelson Jackson, wife of President Andrew Jackson died only two weeks after her husband was elected to office. She was buried wearing the gown she was supposed to wear to his inauguration ceremony.

Ellen Lewis Herndon Arthur, wife of Chester Arthur died before he was elected, her sister Mary served as unofficial first lady during Arthur's term in office.

Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson died 20 twenty years before the election of Thomas Jefferson - she was diabetic.

Hannah Van Buren died 17 years before Martin Van Buren's election. She was his cousin as well as his wife.

Ah, those were the days, they don't make first ladies like that no more.

You're assuming he'll live that long, heart surgery on a major scale a while back, an outside bet to peg out ahead of her election in 2008.

Unless you supply me a list with the latter, no.

This one is more interesting as more often the males outlive the females (almost the reverse of the US), so I'm going to change it slightly in wives/partners etc that died BEFORE Hubby (or wife in one case):

Denis Thatcher, Audrey Callaghan, Elizabeth Douglas-Home, Dorothy MacMillan, Violet Attlee, Lucy Baldwin, Margaret McDonald, Annie Bonar Law, Margaret Lloyd-George (DLG's 1st wife), Helen Asquith (HA's 1st wife), Arthur Balfour never married but his fiancee died before the wedding, Hannah de Rothschild (Marquess de Roseberry's wife), Mary Disraeli, BOTH of the Earl of Aberdeen's wives died before he became PM, Adelaide Ribblesdale (Earl Russell's first wife), Lady Caroline-Posonby Lamb (Viscount Melbourne's wife),

Catherine Pakenham (Wellington's wife), Louise Hervey (Earl of Liverpool's 1st wife), BOTH of Henry Addington's wives, Lady Dorothy Cavendish, BOTH of the Earl of Shelbourne's wives, Anne North, Duke of Grafton's first wife, and a few more in the 18th century, but I'm bored now. You get the gist.....

Died whilst partner was in term of office:

Charlotte Campbell-Bannerman

Octi, you're a gem. Re mayors of Maryport, couldn't even tell you who the current incumbant is, you can often spot them cos they're the only one in town with a shiny car.

Glad you inserted the word shiny in there.

Some days there's - ooh - a dozen cars in Maryport at one time. Lucky the mayor's has a bit of polish on it so's we never get it confused with the other rust buckets.

Look hard at the Maryport picture below....do you see many cars? The area on the harbour in front of the Sea Life Centre - ie about central in this picture - is a car park!

Oh aye, and Lady Bird Johnson is a very old lady so we sould - like - get back on topic soon eh?

It always seemed a little curious that all members of the Johnson family had the same initials - LBJ. President Lyndon Baines Johnson, his wife, their children Lynda Bird and Lucie Baines, even family dog Little Beagle Johnson. Apparently the ever modest President took it upon himself to bestow his loved ones with names which matched his own initials.

This made me wonder if he renamed his wife (real name Claudia Alta Taylor), but it turns out she had the Lady Bird nickname since childhood, because someone thought she "looked cute as a lady bird". Delightful - named after a bug. How many other famous figures could also fall into this category? Here's an initial list:

Adam Ant

Ant (from Ant and Dec)

Patrick Roach (from Auf Wiedersehen Pet)

Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

Maggott (off Big Brother, reportedly some sort of musician)

can anyone think of any others?

Mary Roach. As the author of Stiff, she'd be sure to get an obit if she died suddenly, if only for the comedy value.

There's a Canadian musician Jaymz Bee, although the spelling looks iffy. And there's an artist who calls himelf Fly.

Hein

The Jim Rose circus featured Wasp Man who donned a black t-shirt, yellow and black striped trousers and boasted - I think - a waistline under 20 inches.

Then there's country music singer Skeeter Davis.

Yip, Ladybird Johnson is old, and could peg out at any moment.
