I assume the bidding will be opened by the Luxembourg Prime Minister?

Looks like no-one’s going to want for sparkling glassware at the next garden party at the Grand Duchy.

Please don't tell me that's the Luxemburg PM....

No, [allegedly] this is him...

Which sort of explains why everyone was seeking his opinion earlier in the piece.

There is a lot of controversy even after Arafat’s death. The article linked to Typhoid Harry's latest post has brought an interesting but controversial point concerning Arafat's death to the forefront. So far there seems to be 2 theories as to the cause of his death. The one that seems to be getting some publicity is that he had aids as described in the 2 articles in the link below:

The other theory is that is being promoted by militant groups is that he was poisoned by Israel, as mentioned in this article below:

Looks like we will never know what really happened as everything has been shrouded in secrecy from the moment he got sick in Ramallah to the time that his death in Paris was announced.

Looks like CBS messed up...

CBS 'sorry' for Arafat newsflash

In short, they broadcast news of Arafat's death 5 minutes before the end of CSI:New York, interrupting the programme.

In response to viewer complaints, CBS announced the episode would be repeated in its entirety on Friday evening.

It is still unclear whether Arafat died again during the re-showing :(

Arafat's Brother Dies of Cancer at 67

By Associated Press

December 1, 2004, 3:25 PM EST

CAIRO, Egypt -- Fathi Arafat, the brother of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and founder of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, died Wednesday. He was 67.

Arafat died at 5:20 p.m. at the Palestine Hospital in suburban Cairo, where he had been receiving treatment for stomach cancer, said Mae Arif, spokeswoman for the Palestinian Red Crescent Society. Arafat, a physician, was the hospital's director.

In New York City, Arafat's nephew, Nasser al-Kidwa, the Palestinian envoy to the United Nations, mourned his death.

"He was not only an uncle but he was a friend, a personal friend I think," al-Kidwa said.

Arafat had been suffering from stomach cancer for about four years and has had two operations in the past three years. Last month, a hospital official said the cancer had spread throughout his body.

Arafat quit his position as chairman of the Palestinian Red Crescent three years ago, but has served as honorable chairman. He was also a senior member of Fatah, the Palestine Liberation Organization's political movement headed by his brother.

Arafat is survived by his wife, Nadia, and two grown children. His funeral will be held Friday at Cairo's Armed Forces mosque and he will be buried in Egypt, according to his relatives.

His brother, Yasser Arafat, 75, died Nov. 11 in Paris and was buried at his headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

Seven years later there seems to be some movement in this matter: The Jerusalem Post quotes Al Jazeera that:

Yasser Arafat's personal belongings have revealed that they contained abnormal levels of the radioactive substance polonium

If this turns out to be real, it seems Arafat was indeed poisoned.

Edit to add: Al Jazeera claims Arafat's widow wants his body exhumed.

Next question: by whom? Polonium isn't exctly stuff you buy by the pound at the chemist's.

Hein

He's coming back from the grave, thanks to approval by the Palestinian president.

Then again, perhaps he won't.

Considering the short shelf life (or half life as scientists would call it) the idea that there were abnormally high amounts of polonium in his personal effects seems somewhat suspect.

For purposes of purchasing, I would figure either an online search or a back alley meeting would be how most folks get theirs.

Another method would be to obtain Lead-210 and then get in a time travel machine and go back a few months to when it was still polonium prior to the decay.

His body will be exhumed . Either way they will say he was poisoned even if he wasn't for political points scoring.
