Our American cousins, are more likely to die of an opiod o/d than in a car crash

https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/01/14/odds-dying-opioid-overdose-higher-than-car-crash-analysis-finds/2567996002/

And note that the 49,000 figure is specifically opioid overdoses alone; the total USA overdose death toll last year came to 72,000, nearly half again as many.  And according to the UN office on drugs and crime, the USA has the highest drug overdose rate per capita of any country in the world; unsurprising as the total worldwide drug overdose death tally came to 160,000 in 2015. Meaning, most likely, that the 4% of the world's population who live in the USA account for more than 40% of all drug overdose deaths worldwide.  Within the USA, the single worst hit state is West Virginia, with an annual mortality of 57.8 drug overdose deaths per 100,000 people per year, or 1 in every 2,000 people dying of an overdose each year.  EDIT: It's no surprise, then, that West Virginia has such a low life expectancy; at 75.4 years, it comes in lower than Jamaica, Serbia, or Algeria.

Which is not to say the situation is great elsewhere either. The UK has also been setting new drug overdose death records for itself in recent years, with a record 3,744 drug poisoning deaths in England and Wales in 2016, for instance. The worst hit region, the Northeast, has an annual mortality of 7.7 drug misuse deaths per 100,000 people per year. EDIT: Also, if the US are world champions, the UK are EU champions, with the highest rate of drug-related deaths of any EU country, and accounting for 31% of the EU total.

Interesting bit on hospice care, and that in this case is cheaper than continuing his treatment, and he's lived way longer in better health.

Given the gift of "The Cure" by a man she met in Austria 40 years ago lol.

Once she was asked by a farmer to cure a flock of sheep of the contagious ovine skin condition orf.

"I never knew I had a cure for that," she told BBC News NI.

"But he rang back three days later to say it had gone," she said.

:D Magnificent read.

It's not just celebs who've had a quiet spell... overall deaths in england and wales have been below average almost every week in the first quarter of this year, in spite of the ageing population etc: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/weeklyprovisionalfiguresondeathsregisteredinenglandandwales

Dare I ask if the reaper has been napping? (Although I'd guess the most likely causes are mild weather and a quiet flu season).

The "Departure Lounge" - a place to come to terms with mortality:

"Death has been a zeitgeist subject for some years now – witness the Death Café phenomenon, the growth of conferences and books on dying and TV series like the recent Ricky Gervais Netflix comedy After Life. "

No mention of the DeathList though - but "Top Tips for a Good Death"

Site of John - Elephant Man - Merrick's burial identified. Obviously his skeleton is preserved but the stuff they scraped off it was buried in a London cemetary and the location forgotton - until someone spotted a badly misshapen tree! (Maybe I made the last bit up)

Save My Ink Forever, a family-run business based in Cleveland, Ohio, works with funeral homes in the US, the UK, and Canada to preserve the tattoos of people who have died, as a memorial for their loved ones.
Oh it's every bit as gruesome as that sentence sounds.  Here's the photo from the article, which I am guessing is an example of their finest work.  Think it would look nice above the dining table.

What would you have as your funeral song?

An interesting point is that some people choose songs they loathed in life as a piss-take. Personally, I don't hate the people in my life enough to have them sit through sodding Westlife.

Late aunt went with Three Little Birds by Bob Marley. Maw has made it very clear that she wants this specific remix of Adagio for Strings:

Ahhh, I'll get stuck into the comments later.  Often some witty stuff in the Grauniad BTL.

But this is well worth its own thread on here.  Don't we have one?

I once started a thread on songs featuring death, but I can't remember if there's one for funeral music.  If not, we need one.
