He was friends with them too. I do kind of feel sorry for Jimmy Carter. I mean yeah the guy is in remission and he still has his wife but to lose your grandson just after going into remission losing all your younger siblings before 65 and also losing friends and relatives like June and Johnny must be horrible in a sense that you have outlived nearly all your generation. Despite being the oldest, she outlived all her Golden Girls co-stars, and it looks like she's going to outlive some MTM stars: Harper, Moore, maybe even Leachman, Asner and MacLeod. Normally it is on the skin (although Oliver Sacks died of ocular melanoma, which is a primary cancer of the eye), but in Jimmy's case it has already spread to his liver and brains. Metastatic melanoma has carried a dismal prognosis until very recently, but in the last few years advances in immunotherapy have changed the picture.
