Most serial killers are. Really good point One thing I recall clearly from reading Somebody's Husband... years ago is a conversation Sutcliffe had with his brother after Sutcliffe's arrest. He referred to the collection of tools in the back of his car as his "killing tackle," a really down-to-earth take on the day-to-day work of being a mass murderer. Very banal, a bit Yorkshire and - yeah - maybe a clue to the likely identity of the earlier ripper. Given the lack of decent forensics etc. in the 19th century it would have been easier for a killer to leave a crime scene and not leave evidence. Jacob Isenschimdt was suspected (a butcher who ended up in an asylum and could pass easily in the streets despite being covered in blood). He was in an asylum when the two final ripper murders occured. But the police were at least on to one strong evidential thread in thinking about who might be able to move around London, including in the immediate aftermath of a murder and avoid suspicion - perhaps because their job left them with a means of passing off crime scene evidence as normal grubbiness from their employment.

It's a very good dramatisation of such a tragic story which focuses on the victims, their families and the police rather than the murderer. It feels very bad taste to mention it but there's only a few of those represented prominently in the drama who I believe are still alive. They include Jim Hobson (one of the main police inspectors), Marcella Claxton (one of the surviving victims) and Doreen Hill (mother of the final victim). I hope the last two in particular have found some peace in their later years.
