Just watched the fascinating Challenger disaster documentary on Netflix. 

Many ex-astronauts featured look in good shape, although Richard Truly looks quite doddery now. 

Larry Mulloy, effectively painted as the bad guy, doesn't look great but his boss, William Lucas, looks very well at 98.

Joe Kilminster, of Morton Thiokol, clearly has some Parkinson-related disease but his voice was relatively strong. Its surprising how many key players to the disaster, then in their mid 50s, are still going. Maybe karma for the seven who died early if you believe in that kind of thing.

Were Challenger era astronauts Karol Bobko (pilot of Challenger's first flight) Frederick Hauck (Commander of first flight after Challenger), Richard Covey (He was the CAPCOM that day) there?

The seven who died early survived the explosion and there's an audio recording of them trying in vain to stay calm and get what's left of their ship under control, right?

 

Think they'd have swapped those final two and a half minutes for a dose of the doddery in later life

Thats nice. Hauck is in pretty decent shape from a Youtube video from 2019 and Bobko appeared in the 2019 hall of fame ceremony also in decent shape.

 

As for what I know about the other early shuttle era members from Astronaut Group 8. Brandenstein, Coats, Shaw, Gregory, Gibson, Seddon, Hoffmann and Sullivan appeared in the 2019 Astronaut hall of fame ceremony and all are doing very good. Shriver seems to be only involved in Hubble Telescope related events which is fair since he was commander of that mission.

Also all the living Group 8 women seem to be doing really good and have all appeared recently in public. The other day Kathy Sullivan went to the deepest point on Earth

No information about Creighton and the other non pilot and women members of Astronaut Group 8.

No, the last recording is of the pilot one second before the explosion. It is not known how many died instantly but apparently all of them would have been rendered unconscious instantly.

My memory is so shoddy that despite watching this only about 3 days ago I cannot recall if there was any reference to PEAP's in the actual programme however it did prompt me to re-appraise some of the information out there as one does, and there is some evidence that either or both of Ellison Onizuka and Judith Resnick were conscious long enough to activate their PEAP devices and that of pilot Michael J Smith (his switch was beyond his own reach on his back).
