Why the fuck would this post get 4 crying face emojis?  Who cares about an astronauts widow’s cause of death?  (At all really)
What the hell is wrong with you people?  Ya wee tender-hearted fucks.

Now I've just done it to annoy you :P

My memory is so shoddy that despite watching this only about 3 days ago I cannot recall if there was any reference to PEAP's in the actual programme however it did prompt me to re-appraise some of the information out there as one does, and there is some evidence that either or both of Ellison Onizuka and Judith Resnick were conscious long enough to activate their PEAP devices and that of pilot Michael J Smith (his switch was beyond his own reach on his back).

Hmm, my bad re the tape - my best guess is OoO's usual diligence above is to be trusted.

Here's a run through that locates the original tape story to the Weekly World News and points out the tape in question couldn't exist because the astronauts were on different decks and couldn't have seen and heard each other and also the tape - which in 1986 would have been a magnetic tape - wouldn't have survived six weeks in sea water, which is how long it took NASA to retrieve the capsule.

Absolutely.

I'm personally unconvinced by a transcripts in general, if such exists lets have the audio, anybody can publish unverified text. Sure some come from more reputable sources than others but the 'it's too awful to listen to' argument only stands up for me if somebody (preferably somebodies) genuinely unimpeachable takes one for the team.

There is audio of the last few seconds of the Apollo 1 crew, low-fi and decidedly not for the nervous

I spoke to someone once who indicated he was going to rip it and put dance beats behind it. If that happened and it was inflicted on the record buying public I never found out about it.

We know.  It was posted on the ice hockey thread yesterday.

You've just pissed off everybody who has an interest in the Scavenger Hunt deadpool by posting in this thread.

A pick for two DDP teams. Invented the "space treadmill". Should pick up a QO of some sort.

Millie Hughes-Fulford, the first non-professional US woman astronaut in space (ii.e. she was a working scientist) is reported dead aged 75; she flew on shuttle mission STS-40 as a payload specialist in 1991.

Never understood why NASA gets its astronauts to sit down and pose with a wee toy version of the spacecraft whilst looking a bit dazed and confused.

Perhaps they don't understand why NASA gets them to pose with a wee toy version of the spacecraft.

Not quite an astronaut, but Allan McDonald, who directed the booster rocket project at NASA contractor Morton Thiokol and who was at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida for the ill-fated launch of the Challenger in 1986, has died. He was 83.

Now that this door has been opened, let’s kick it in!  But where the fuck else is one supposed to post a NASA engineer?

Kenneth C. Kelly, an electronics engineer whose antenna designs contributed to the race to the moon, made satellite TV and radio possible and helped NASA communicate with Mars rovers and search for extraterrestrials, has died. The black 92-year-old also worked to erase race barriers in the Navy, in California housing and on the newspaper comics pages.

Kelly had Parkinson's disease before his death on Feb. 27.

Kelly was awarded more than a dozen patentsfor innovations in radar and antenna technology.

Philip Chapman, the first Australian (though a US citizen) to train as a NASA astronaut has died aged 86. Selected in 1967, he resigned from NASA in 1972, because of what he saw as limited potential for scientists. He was mission scientist on the Apollo 14 mission, co-ordinating the experiments from earth.

He was a part of the Gemini 10 mission as well.

Buzz Aldrin is now the last surviving member of the Apollo 11 mission.
