Hmm, my bad re the tape - my best guess is OoO's usual diligence above is to be trusted. 

 

Here's a run through that locates the original tape story to the Weekly World News and points out the tape in question couldn't exist because the astronauts were on different decks and couldn't have seen and heard each other and also the tape - which in 1986 would have been a magnetic tape - wouldn't have survived six weeks in sea water, which is how long it took NASA to retrieve the capsule.

I'm personally unconvinced by a transcripts in general, if such exists lets have the audio, anybody can publish unverified text. Sure some come from more reputable sources than others but the 'it's too awful to listen to' argument only stands up for me if somebody (preferably somebodies) genuinely unimpeachable takes one for the team.

Not quite an astronaut, but Allan McDonald, who directed the booster rocket project at NASA contractor Morton Thiokol and who was at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida for the ill-fated launch of the Challenger in 1986, has died. He was 83.

Kelly, an electronics engineer whose antenna designs contributed to the race to the moon, made satellite TV and radio possible and helped NASA communicate with Mars rovers and search for extraterrestrials, has died. The black 92-year-old also worked to erase race barriers in the Navy, in California housing and on the newspaper comics pages.

Kelly had Parkinson's disease before his death on Feb. 27.

Kelly was awarded more than a dozen patentsfor innovations in radar and antenna technology.

Selected in 1967, he resigned from NASA in 1972, because of what he saw as limited potential for scientists. He was mission scientist on the Apollo 14 mission, co-ordinating the experiments from earth.
