Another popular product from Burton-on-Trent is Marmite. A by-product of the rubber industry. My nick translates litterally to "Skinny Henry". It's the Dutch equivalent to "Grim Reaper". I said that with the sole aim of provoking my friend Mr Josco (a particular favourite pastime of mine which combines its self well with the consumption of beer). He can get very defensive about Marmite. Sadly he failed to rise to it this time If "mager" is the same word in Dutch as it is in German, then "lean" might be a better translation. Pretty much the same, so 'thin' would work too. I picked on "lean" because it has two connected meanings in common with the German "mager". Lean (as in meat with little fat) and thin (of a person). Also: abgemagert= emaciated and Magersucht= anorexia Tune in again to DL's language class tomorrow, when we'll cover swearing in German. Might not be a bad plan to have a database of abusive German available to members just in case Mr. Kraut should pop by unexpectedly. Or if Waldheim should die. I have never had a proper dry Martini, I have often promised myself a trip to a London hotel bar to order one, but it has never happened. I believe that James Bond had it wrong, and it should be stirred not shaken. Has anyone else had this drink (properly mixed and served)? Is it worth seeking out? DWB Ah dry martini I've never had one in a London bar, but my father makes a good one. Apparently, best made with 1/4 Noilly Prat and 3/4 Bombay Sapphire Gin. The gin should be kept in the freezer as should the glasses and the Noilly Prat should be kept in the fridge and discarded if not drunk within 2 weeks of opening. If it is cooled in this way, there is no need to shake, as the shaking is required to cool it over crushed ice which has a horrible habit of diluting it. The quantity of Noilly Prat does vary, some people just coat the class with the vermouth and fill it with 'frozen' gin. Finish with a green olive (with a pip in it, not soggy red stuff). Definitely worth seeking out. p.s. I think James Bond drank vodka martini - an altogether silly drink IMHO. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
