Ladies champion 50 years ago - there's a few won it since her and carked by now

Actually since Maria Bueno's last title (1964) only one Wimbledon womens champion - Jana Novotna - has died.

Shirley Fry who won in 1956 and Brit Angela Mortimer (1961 winner) both still with us but very old now.

Not to say tennis is astoundingly good for your longevity, but Gimeno is the only French Open champion to have died from the last 61 champions.  In fact the 1950 French Open winner, Budge Patty, is alive aged 95.

Folk like Jana Novotna and poor old Elena Baltacha are very much the exception.

Gimeno, who won one Grand Slam and was Australian Open runner-up in 1969, remains the oldest player to win Roland Garros, lifting the trophy aged 34 after beating Frenchman Patrick Proisy in the final.

(I'll assume most of you give a cursory reading of your obits you post.  You see a great fact like this, please pull it out of the text.  Thanks in advance.)

I notice from Twitter that Chris Evert's mother is still going aged 91.

That's 4 DDP hits in one day, so far (although I guess I have to change Gale Sayers' date of death by a day - yesterday, the sources were unclear).

Well this actually confirms that Bobby Wilson died on 21st September: http://announcements.telegraph.co.uk/deaths/244507/wilson

Note: Top English tennis player dies, so far as I know only covered in the Herald Scotland. Wow. That Dean Jones must have been really British.

Anyway, I got my hit and my QO without waiting months.

Ah, I see someone is happy about my push last year to return the Herald as a QO.

Am afraid to say my current attempts to get Mumsnet accepted as a DDP Qualifying Obit are being treated with far more scepticism by Reptile and Grim!
