arghton 6,763 Posted May 11, 2021 Talking about outliving your successors, R. L. Bhatia (1920 or 1921-2021), the governor of Kerala 2004-2008 (Gowri amma was the Minister of Agriculture, Soil Conservation, Soil Survey, Warehousing Corporation, Diary Development, Milk Co-operatives, Agricultural University, Animal Husbandry and Coir during his tenure) has outlived four of his successors (three of his immediate successors), all younger than him (R. S. Gavai 1929-2015, M. O. H. Farook 1937-2012, H. R. Bhardwaj 1937-2020 and Sheila Dikshit 1938-2019, however Nikhil Kumar, P Sathasivam and Arif Mohammad Khan are alive) They celebrated his 100th in July 2020, but wikipedia says he was born in 1921. Even more interestingly, Kenneth Kaunda, already an immortal, has outlived 14 of his successors as the Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement, 8 of which were his immediate successors (Houari Boumédiène 1932-1978, William Gopallawa 1896-1981, Junius Richard Jayewardene 1906-1996, Fidel Castro 1926-2016, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy 1913-1996, Zail Singh 1916-1994, Robert Mugabe 1924-2019, Janez Drnovšek 1950-2008 and later ones: Branko Kostic 1939-2020, Dobrica Ćosić 1921-2014, Suharto 1921-2008, Nelson Mandela 1918-2013, Hosni Mubarak 1928-2020 and Mohamed Morsi 1951-2019) If he lives long enough to see Borisav Jović (1928-2021) and Stjepan Mesić (b. 1934) die, he'll have outlived 13 of his immediate successors. arghton 6,763 Posted May 15, 2021 Kerala has some other politicians with immortal-potential: C. Rangarajan (b. 1932) Additional charge Kerala Governornor 2000-2002, only alive Bhatia's predecessor but probably not Keralan, as he's been everywhere during the last 25 years. Growing stronger politically, chaired a covid response committee. Looks 20 years younger, probably undestructible.

arghton 6,763 Posted May 28, 2021 My immortal-candidate Vesa-Matti Loiri, picture apparently from two days ago with a colleague (or possibly older as they aren't wearing masks) I'm very suprised that he has "bounced back" from his period of bad health in the 2000s/2010s. He's had half a century of alcohol and tobacco use and a book about him from a couple of years ago reveals that he still smokes like a chimney. He has diabetes, sleep apnea and blood pressure diseases. Here in the late 2000s: The guy was unable to walk without help and often in a wheelchair, was 150kg/330 pounds and hospitalized frequently. His parents did live to 85 and 97, but he has had multiple near-death experiences during the last 50 years. One was a suicide attempt by sleeping pills, two were accidents and many were because of his health. I'd say that he's had one foot in the grave for centuries. Nowadays a grumpy old man, once assaulted two of his colleagues. Otherwise a great guy
drol 11,974 Posted May 29, 2021 Four new entries: Muhammad Saeed al-Sahhaf, aka Baghadad Bob, or Comical Ali (1940): cancer sufferer from 2014, though now in remission. Falsely announced to have died at least three times. Yu Miu-lin (1937): Hong Kong actress who spent months on life support due to pulmonary fibrosis and blood cancer. Now on the mend, unexplicably. Violeta Chamorro (1929): suffering from brain tumours for decades, she was gravely ill in 2018 after a stroke. Still clings on. Juan Ponce Enrile (1924): if 108 millions people think he is immortal, why should they be wrong?

Interesting how all of the five original members of the Junta of National Reconstruction that governed Nicaragua from July 1979 to January 1985 are still alive (at the writing of this): Daniel Ortega (b. 1945), Sergio Ramírez (b. 1942), Moisés Hassan (b. 1942), Alfonso Robelo (b. 1939) and Violeta Chamorro (b. 1929). Chamerro and Robelo resigned in 1980 and were replaced by Arturo Cruz (1923-2013) and Rafael Córdova Rivas (1923-2009). From the Liberal-Conservative Junta "triumvirate" that governed the country 1972-1974, all members are dead: Roberto Martínez Lacayo (1899-1984), Alfonso Lovo Cordero (1927-2018) and Fernando Agüero (1917-2011).
