Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is now the "Chief adviser of the reception committee for the 11th all-India conference of the Democratic Youth Federation of India".

He's unable to physically meet anyone he's advising as he's bedbound and apparently also unable to talk (can't read out the message he penned wishing for the success of the conference) but "shares his thoughts through his family". His COPD has been in late stages for years, no idea how he's still alive.

 

Is Alberto Fujimori still hospitalised? Three weeks is quite a long Fujimori hospitalisation.

Are there going to be any mid-year (ish) additions  this year, like there was last year? I've got a small amount (five) of suggestions if there will be, a few of which I may have suggested before:

 

1. Giorgio Napolitano. 96, aortic dissection in 2018, survived being in ICU after "delicate surgery" in 2022, very frail.

2. Benedict XVI, 95, stroke in 1991, fall in 1992, suffering from heart problems for decades and had a pacemaker implanted over 20 years ago, mild stroke in 2005, bypass operation and fall in 2006, arthritis, shingles in 2020. Incredibly frail for the last 10 years yet has managed to outlive Eduardo Somalo and Angelo Sodano who was his successor as the Dean of the College of Cardinals. 

3. Chiam See Tong, 87-year-old Singaporean politician who suffered two strokes in the 2000s, had a fall in 2013 and has been suffering from Parkinson's since atleast 2011, now apparently in late stages. 

4. Pasqual Maragall, 81, Spanish politician and former President of the Govt of Catalonia. Suffering from Alzheimer's for atleast 15 years. 

5. Shyam Saran Negi, 105 in July. He's been close to death so many times, how the hell is he still alive? (Or could be that he is dead and they just keep wheeling his mummified corpse around)

Known health issues: Suffering from cerebrovascular disease since 2006 at least, hospitalised multiple times with pneumonia from 2017 to 2019, wheelchair bound and frail in 2021.

Cause of death: Natural causes. Died quietly in his sleep, a luck many of his victims didn't have.

Alignment: As minister of the Interior in the 60s he was responsible for introducing extensive repression, which culminated in Tlatelolco massacre of 1968, whereabout 400 people, mostly students were mowed down as ordered by Echeverria and president Diaz Ordaz. Echeverria later admitted they were unarmed and the massacre had the goal of detroying the student movement. As a president, he held close relationship with both sides and Mexican economy improved rapidly. Nonethless, he sticked to his old habits and was the inventor of death flights, which were soon to be adopted throughout all Latin America. He also escaped justice for the rest of his life. Yes, a good person, summarizing.

I was going to suggest Gorby (hospitalised a number of times with pneumonia, kidney problems) and Pope Ben XVI (strokes, falls, heart problems, everything), mentioned already above in Grimgrass' post, but I've got a lot of names, Gorby, Ben XVI, etc not included as mentioned already. Over half of these 30 will probably be dead by the start of 2023...

 

1. Zhang Lixiong

I don't know if he meets the requirements and I didn't really know who to put on spot one in this suggestions list, fairly obscure Chinese PLA founding Major General and Deputy of the 5th National People's Congress, but surviving a very lengthy multiple month hospitalisation (ca. 2020-2021) during which he had to wear an NG tube and "deteriorated multiple times" according to Chinese media is something extraordinary at his age. He'll be 109 in November if he'll still be alive.

2. Chiam See Tong

Singapore politician, stroke in 2008, another stroke (possibly also in 2008?), severe fall in 2011. In failing health for over a decade, suffering from end-stage parkinson's for years and possibly dementia. That picture is from August 2019.

3. Ilia II

Forever-ruling Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia who has survived hospitalisations in 2008 (heart problem), 2009 (fever), twice 2014 (spinal surgery and heart treatment in Germany), 2017 (gallbladder surgery, also survived an assasination attempt) and 2019 (weakness). Health problems include advanced Parkinson's disease that he has been battling for atleast 8 years and a heart disease.

4. KH Ali Yafie

Indonesian islamic scholar, incredibly frail. On ventilator after a severe lung infection in 2018, in January 2020 he was hospitalised and widowed. Bed/wheelchairbound.

5. Oscar Wyatt

Texas oilman, stroke in 2009, obese, really frail for the last years.

6. Carlos Bilardo: At this point deserves a spot on the list. Argentine footballer, Hakim-Adams syndrome, has undergone a lot of brain surgeries, was "in serious condition" in 2019.

7. Hsing Yun: Near-blind diabetic Taiwanese buddhist monk, has suffered atleast three strokes, lots of heart problems but still doesn't seem like he's dying soon.

8. Giorgio Napolitano: Former Italian President, ruptured aorta, open heart surgery in 2018, hospitalised in ICU for surgery in 2022.

9. Baruch Mordechai Ezrachi 1929-2023: Israeli rabbi, hospitalised with covid in 2020, hospitalised in June 2021 with weakness and infections, hospitalised again in critical condition, in ICU and on respirator in October 2021 and needed to be resuscitated. His survival was called a medical miracle by doctors.

10. Parkash Singh Badal: Hospitalised four times in 2022, obese with asthma and other health problems. Still doesn't seem like he'll die anytime soon.

11. Sonny Rollins: Heroin addiction in the 1950s, nonagenarian suffering from pulmonary fibrosis for longer time than the average life expectancy of a person with it.

12. Yang You: Hospitalised for around three years now? And he's 104.

13. Thích Thanh Từ: Frail Vietnamese Buddhist monk, looked 100 years old for the last 20 years.

14. Emlain Kabua 1928-2023: 94, former First Lady of the Marshall Islands and designer of the flag of the island country, looked like a zombie years ago. Probably the oldest person in her country at this point.

15. Rahimuddin Khan 1926-2022: Pakistani military figure, already in failing health in 2013, unable to make any public appearances since.

16. Sheikh Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah: Kuwait prince wheelchairbound, 96, obese, frail for decades, rumored dead a few years ago around when he was hospitalised. Seems to be unable to talk and hasn't made any appearances in nearly 2 years.

17. Manmohan Singh: Former Prime Minister of India. Heart problems, lots of hospitalisations over the last years for dengue, weakness, covid, fever, everything.

18. Constantine II 1940-2023: Strokes, heart attacks, UTIs, bouts of pneumonia, pulmonary edema, nothing is enough to kill the Greek god.

19. Ray Cordeiro 1924-2023: Hong Kong DJ, GRRM lookalike, stroke in January, obese.

20. King Salman: Saudi King in and out of hospital for years (Spinal surgery in 2010, gallbladder inflammation in 2019, gallbladder surgery in 2020, hospitalised twice in 2022), stroke survivor who suffers from dementia.

21. Emmanuel Wamala: Uberfrail Ugandan cardinal, hospitalised lots of times during the last years, notably in July 2017 when he was critically ill and rumored dead twice this year. Still makes appearances, walks with a cane and his face looks very swollen.

22. Alma Adamkienė: Former First Lady of Lithuania, hospitalised twice in 2018, hospitalised in 2019 after she suffered a serious stroke that had permanent effects. Hospitalised in 2021 and 2022.

23. Shige Mineshiba 1909-2023: Oldest person in Canada, heart attack and heart surgery in 1996, has suffered from dementia for around 13 years and now bedbound.

24. Ele Alenius 1925-2022: Finnish socialist 1960s anti-Soviet Union politician, author and philosopher. Ancient, stroke and fall that left him unconscious around 2018. Too ill to attend his 97th birthday celebration in 2022.

25. Josip Manolić: Indestructible Croatian communist leader, notorious due to his old age and longevity. Survived covid and pneumonia in April 2021 - without needing a hospitalisation.

26. Queen Ratna: In failing health for over a decade, already reported "ailing" in 2008, the former Queen, Queen Mother and Queen Grandmother of Nepal has been hospitalised a couple of times in recent years, notably three years ago due to persistent cough. Was wheelchairbound in 2019.

27. Shyam Saran Negi (1917-2022): 105-year-old Indian who has been rumored dead and seemingly near death multiple times during the last years, including in January 2020. Now the last notable Indian born in the 1910s. How the hell is he still alive?

28. Winnie Ewing 1929-2023: Scottish politician, alzheimer's, very unwell for years, one of the top "How the hell is she still alive?" names on the DL Forum.

29. Sonomyn Luvsangombo: Mongolian ancient General and minister during the cold war. Grown skeletal in recent years.

30. Abigail K. K. Kawānanakoa 1926-2022: 96-year-old Hawaiian lesbian princess, member of the House of Kawānanakoa. Suffered a severe stroke in 2017 that allegedly left her impaired. Public appearances very rare.

Some suggestions:

 

Bas de Gaay Fortman - Looks worse than I think he ought to. I will be surprised if he is not gone in the next few years. 

Peter Procter - Terminal cancer since at least 2019. He was also badly injured in a motor racing accident in 1966.

Michael J. Fox - Parkinson's for about 35 years. Officially diagnosed in 1991, but it is reckoned that he has had it for longer. Reported dead not so long ago. 

Lando Buzzanca - Worthy of consideration should he see 2023.

Harry Whittington - Shot by Dick Cheney in 2006 and has subsequently suffered from numerous ailments. 

Milos Zeman - Basically suffers from every ailment known and unknown to humankind. 

Pervez Musharraf - Another one that may not see 2023, surely a must for the main list if he does? Seems to be none too dissimilar to Zeman. 

Tim Curry - Stroke in 2012, has been wheelchair-bound since.

Queen Elizabeth II - Seems to be coping well, given her Stage 27 Terminal Cancer Cancer diagnosis last year. 

Frank Field - I don't think anyone, except maybe the DL committee, expected him to get this far. 

Kazimierz Klimczak - Frail, has been a war invalid since 1939(!) 

William Roache - Slightly different interpretation of immortal, but he is doing incredibly well for 90 and seemingly can rather easily pass for a healthy man 10 years younger (Ken Barlow is supposed to be born in 1939).

Mikhail Gorbachev - Honestly thought he was on the 2021 class of immortals. Surely, if he makes it to 2023, he should be considered?
