In the book, this serves as a major characterization point for Ron... As until that point we didn't realize how (paradoxically) poor they were (despite his father holding a rather important civil position in the magic government, among other things). The woman's character is alluded to or mentioned in other books, though weirdly (at least by JKR standards), she's never been given a name. And considering the randoms she's named over the years...
