Tony Bullimore, sailor whose survival at sea for four days in an upturned boat was a major news story back in the day (and saw him forever immortalised in an I'm Alan Patridge gag), dead at 79.

Hmm, a reverse Balloon Boy.... (checking what's up with him and his family is sort-of interesting, in the way Real Housewives is interesting).

Elliot Willis out of the Olympic team as diagnosed with bowel cancer at 32.

Ah, one of the hundreds of forgotten names... but here a quite recent update:

"Not quite out of the woods yet", his first year was particularly difficult. But plans on coaching future olympic champions.

Edit: I guess he would have been dead by now, if this had happened, say 20 or even just 10 years ago, but treatment is getting better.

Place-holding now.

They're building a full scale Titanic 2.

Whit could go wrong? All 3 sister ships hit the bottom.

Re this thread - Lister died last year. Should we not - like - consider remaning it to summat like A Cark on the Ocean Waves?

You'd have to rename 1/2 the threads then.

No yo wouldn't. I started this one off in honour of Hilary Lister and it morphed into the random sailing nutjobs. I'd say it's due another morph since we're unlikely to be discussing the late Ms Lister much more but we are likely to be discussing the endless inventions on brave/suicidal challenges at sea.

Oh I get it.  I meant if we swapped out all threads with a person's name who had died, I bet a bunch would have to go.  Not that it matters, just pointing it out.  Nothing wrong with shaking things up around here once in a while.

Her "nutjob" credentials could be debated (I'm on the side of those who think her sane) but Greta Thunberg is about to undertake an ocean journey with more danger to life than if she'd flown the same route (Plymouth to New York): https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/science-environment-49331885/greta-thunberg-s-zero-carbon-journey-i-might-feel-a-bit-sea-sick

Carlo Rolandi, a prominent name in Italian sailing, dead at 94.

Mentioning because he participated in an incredible NINE Olympic Games between 1948 and 1992 – the first six as a competitor, the last three as a jurist.

Not exactly sailing, but sea-kayaking is is a pretty close relation, and certainly falls within the remit of this thread if its transatlantic sea-kayaking.

That being said, transatlantic sea-kayaker Aleksander Doba has died aged 74. If you still doubt his qualifications for this thread, he died whilst climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.

I don’t think anyone could be so pedantic to suggest sailing but jobs refers to those hoisting actual sails rather than anyone adrift at sea on any style craft.

Well you haven't, so that's one opportunity gone by the wayside. We'll have to wait and see.

You understood that? It's like an Eric Morecambe tribute sentence, that.

I suppose the lesson to be learned here is that you should not try to kayak up a mountain.

Close, but no cigar. 75:84 I think.

'Tis a rare and special thing to make that thread.
