Renowned Mountaineers, Feeling Peaky?

Recommended Posts

One of those names I wrote down ages ago on some "this person has an interesting story to tell" tip but never got around to using in a dead pool. Elizabeth Hawley, the woman who for 40 years was the sole tracker of all attempts to climb Mount Everest, has died aged 94.

Legendary climber Jim Bridwell died Friday in Palm Springs at the age of 73, The New York Times reported.  Bridwell’s son said the cause of death was liver failure and hepatitis C.

Last month his family created a GoFundMe to help pay for medical expenses (that apparently not a damned one of us came across).
Bridwell, who spent 15 years in Yosemite, was a living legend. He was written about in major media outlets from GQ to Rolling Stone.  He is credited with 100 first ascents in Yosemite Valley and became the first to complete a one-day ascent of The Nose of El Capitan on May 26, 1975 with John Long and Billy Westbay.

Kind of ironic that someone so famous for staring death down couldn't get crowd funded to survive very long.

Stéphane Husson, a 47-year-old French mountain guide and climber, died last week after a fall in Beaufort, France. On June 20, he was guiding a group of around 20 teenagers during an event put together by the French Alpine Club of Albertville, when he and one of the teenagers, aged 16, fell 20 meters from the top of the crag. The pair was roped together. Husson was taken to a hospital in Grenoble in critical condition, and died the next day. The 16-year-old also passed away, dying on site before help arrived.

Ted Atkins at 60.

RAF cunto that lead their first successful summit of Everest.

Very involved in safety and innovation, he is credited with vastly reducing the death rate on Everest.

Lolling at his prototype breathing system involved a coke bottle, string and a condom :D

Died whilst climbing in Italy, so obviously not as good as he made out.

Eta, he may have been the missing "fifth Chuckle brother"...

I checked the DDP archives back through 2012 without a listing.  However, a quick search of the Deathlist does show he was a 2016 pick in the Hare's Death Pool.  He'd also last been picked in the Alt Obituaries pool in 2016. Wikipedia suggests he had ALS but the obit I included indicates it was never conclusively diagnosed.

Mountaineer Tom Ballard missing since Sunday.

His mammy was the first woman to do Everest unaided, but pegged on K2 in 95.

Was toying with Cup inclusion, but chances are he's already dead.

Bodies of Briton Tom Ballard and Italian Daniele Nardi have been found.

Aye saw that Cat this morning.

Yesterday it was in doubt as silhouettes were seen, but would've been a hard Cup call re date.

Wasn't Tom Ballard the name of Graham Crowden's character, who was always daydreaming of scaling Mt Everest in "Waiting for God"? Was that homage or coincidence?

I loved Waiting for God but given Tom was only about two years old when it started, I think it's the latter.

That climb of the Old Man of Hoy, groundbreaking coverage on the BBC - wonderful to watch (even in B&W)
