Sometimes that peaky feeling can take a long time:

Hikers on the Aletsch glacier in canton Valais have discovered the remains of up to four people, which are believed to date back to the 1920s.

I'll send the expression "a radius of 50 square metres" to our Department of Cruel and Unusual Logic.

regards,

Hein

Now confirmed that one of the Alps dead is Roger Payne; former top official of the British Mountaineering Club and quite likely to get proper obits.

Not sure whether to file here or under "ironic deaths". Frenchman considered "the god of free-climbing" has died aged 52 after falling down the stairs at his home.

Renowned French climber Maurice Herzog @ 93 http://tensport.com.au/news/newsarticles/-French-conqueror-of-Annapurna-dead-at-93.htm

Maurice Herzog, the French climber who conquered Annapurna in the first recorded ascent of a peak above 8,000m, has died aged 93, the French Climbing Federation said Friday.

Herzog led the ascent of Annapurna in 1950, reaching the Himalayan peak's summit without oxygen along with compatriot Louis Lachenal in a feat that caused a sensation around the world.

The achievement was eclipsed three years later by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary's conquest of Everest.

But Herzog went on to become a government minister, a member of the International Olympic Committee, a businessman and a best-selling writer of books on climbing.

Yuri Yudin @ 76 ......

Very notable as he was the sole survivor from the infamous Dyatlov Pass Incident, much loved by conspiracy theorists.

Bloke manages to dig himself out after being buried under snow for six hours, only to die later: http://www.abc.net.a...alanche/5027362

The tour was apparently an illegal one, so no doubt the agency that organised it will be snowed under with complaints...

More significant as a mountaineer than Olympian, which is why I put him here.

So, just an idea, like...

With a few mountaineers still stranded up high Himalayan peaks why hasn't some enterprising online video service not started linking live mobile phone footage in there. getting regular reports, bringing in online traffic to watch the spectacle unfold and using a few of the resulting dollars gleaned from advertising and the online - who gets voted to freeze to death - viewer response to contribute to the rescue efforts?

Eastern Washington University Professor Anna Dvorak was climbing on the Elephant’s Perch rock formation with a partner when she fell around 1:30 p.m. According to a news release from Custer County Search and Rescue, she sustained extensive injuries to her head and face.

Her partner, with the help of another climber, lowered her to a rock ledge, where they began performing first aid. Army Air Guard and Idaho Mountain High Angle Rescue teams were dispatched from Boise. However, because of the remote location, the rescue team wasn’t able to arrive until late in the afternoon.

Her partner and the other climber started performing CPR and rescue breathing. However, she died just after 6 p.m.

I'm picturing giving CPR to a perso what suffered extensive injuries to the head and face.

Anna Dvorak - must have been of Czech ancestry and after seeing her pics I can say she was very pretty as are most of the Czechs

A total aside, but why have we got this AND a Sir Edmund Hillary category? Happily explain the differences and nuances with a smile on your face and love in your heart. Thanks.

OK now.....

A former Royal Marine who was recently engaged has been killed in a climbing accident in the French Alps.

Duncan Potts, 28, died on Wednesday as he climbed the Dent du Geant mountain in the Mont Blanc range near Chamonix.

He was with his friend, Luke Stevens, when a rock came loose in his hand and he fell around three metres.

Despite a mountain rescue team reaching him after Mr Stevens called for help, Mr Potts died at the scene.

SC again

Hillary became a Deathlist selection, and each of the 50 every year get their own personal thread. He was a successful hit in 2008.
