Yesterday, when the fatality count was still at 37, I thought about making a poll on how high it will eventually be. But it's already higher than I thought it would be (around 200). Now I guess it's going to be around 500 in the end.

Chance of a major earthquake on the San Andreas fault jumps from 1 in 6000 to as high as 1 in 100 for between now and Tuesday: http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2016/10/02/earthquake-alert-issued-california

So if it goes off, how many on the DL will it take out in one go? Probably the only way for Zsa Zsa's exit atm.

There is a major cyclone building in northern Australia (Cyclone Debbie). It is expected to reach Category 4 or 5. It has long been said that because the northern cities like Townsville are low-lying, the flooding could cause another New Orleans. It is only a matter of time before a big one hits a major city. We will see what happens.

Most likely to hit the small redneck towns of Ayr or Bowen now. Impact will probably be around Tuesday morning local time.

How's it going? See it has made landfall?

Wall to wall coverage?

Yes, wall to wall coverage. The media are milking it for all it is worth, of course.

It was a Category 4: the strongest wind gust recorded was 270 km/h and the threshold for it to be a Category 5 is 280 km/h so they just missed out.

No reports of casualties yet apart from a girl in a car accident the other day (before it struck) that was blamed on the weather conditions.

It missed Ayr and only just swiped Bowen. The main places affected were Airlie Beach (which is a coastal resort town popular with young backpackers) and a smallish town called Proserpine.  The main city that was somewhat affected was Mackay which is south of the Cyclone but had some flooding.

Still no reports from many areas though as power and mobile towers are out so they will have a clearer idea later today.

Bowen is the main tomato growing area of Australia (it is famous for it - sad when that is the only thing you are famous for) so the main tragedy from this will probably be that the price of fresh veggies is going to go through the roof for a while.

The rain depression will now head down to Brisbane and might cause some local flooding there.

Run your mouse over the photo here though for a before and after picture: :D

Yikes!

Could have been worse, pig shelters, awnings and trees. Hopefully no casualties. UK can't offer trade deals on tomatoes (why does it even have an "e" added btw?) as we get mostly ours from the Med.

LOL - by the time Brexit kicks in, our tomato crops will hopefully have regrown.  We look forward to reaping the $$$$$$$$ from you guys. :D

Saw a doco once on Spain that showed the tomato growing region these days. It was incredible - basically  a wasteland covered in HUGE greenhouses as far as the eye can see growing them all via hydroponics.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck a remote, mountainous part of China's southwestern province of Sichuan, killing 19 people, including eight tourists, and injuring 247.

(Edit: Is it common for people to vacation/tour 'remote mountainous parts of China' ?)

Hurricane Harvey is now pummeling Texas' east coast, and also hitting Louisiana for good measure. Category 4.

What will be interesting is that when thousands die from not being told to evacuate, will Gov. Abbott and Pres. Trump be held accountable for neglegence?

How are you folks in Texas doing?

So, as Harvey made landfall yesterday evening in Texas, it was a Category 4 hurricane, making it one of the strongest hurricanes to make landfall in the US ever.

In the town of Rockport, multiple buildings were damaged, including a senior living facility, and part of the local high school "caved in".

This morning, Harvey has been downgraded to a Category 1 storm.

However, flooding rains are still expected to hit the south Texas area for days upon days, with 40 inches of rain expected into early next week.

Richard Overton lives in Austin, not sure his 111-yr old heart can take it.  Just sayin.
