the song "Convoy" came on the radio the other day. amazingly, the singer C. W. McCall is still alive at 92... it's only his career that died. don't know if anyone outside of north america would recognize this song, so i'm not sure how obit-worthy he would be in the UK.

fun fact, apparently he was the mayor of a city in colorado?

via a name on one of Gooseberrys teams, two film directors born in 1932 I didn't know were still around: Mike Hodges (Get Carter), interviewed here last July, and 50s Roger Corman produced horror Beast from Haunted Cave director Monte Hellman, who went onto produce Reservoir Dogs and still writes bits and bobs.

Corman probably a good punt for this year or next. He was active up until 2018 with appearances, interviews etc. then suddenly stopped. Then again, he is 95 in April. Maybe just decided to finally give everything a rest and lead out his final years in peace.

When Stanley Donen died in 2019 all the obituaries credited him as the last surviving director of Hollywood's Golden era (or to quote his Wiki page "the last surviving notable director of Hollywood's Golden Age"). That's unfair IMO. Corman is the last. Donen is only considered the "last" because his Golden era pictures won awards at the time. Corman's didn't. His early work was largely b-movies and horror... genres that are always cruelly shunned by the Hollywood elite. He was given an honorary Oscar in 2008 nonetheless.

Oh no, I completely agree - The Black Cat, Pit and the Pendulum, Masque of the Red Death etc were my introductions to Poe, and its oft forgotten he trained up Coppola and Scorcese (and many others) in how to make budget Hollywood mogul attention grabbing films. He's certainly a name I'm surprised the DL hasn't gone for yet.

Interestingly enough, he actually did have another Top 40 hit “Wolf Creek Pass.” He’s not a one hit wonder.

Here's a few:

Andy McCoy: Thought he was dead until I heard about him today in the news. This Hanoi Rocks lead guitarist first tried alcohol and weed when he was 9 and raw opium at 16 and heroin at 19. He's been tried/been addicted to heroin, cocaine, codein, meth and amphetamine. Otherwise a great guy, he'll be 59 in October if his body doesn't fail before that.

Jamshid bin Abdullah of Zanzibar: Last Sultan of Zanzibar from 1963 to 1964 when he was deposed. Now he's 91.

Catherine Denguiadé, Empress Consort of CAR's Bokassa. She's not only alive but also as young as 71. Also, Bokassa's last prime minister Henri Maïdou is still alive and 85.

Was listening to a song by Pharoah Sanders today, and I thought surely he must be dead by now given most jazz artists of his era are dead by now. Turns out he’s still living

Josep Gual, long-time illustrator for bizarrely long-running unfunny swinging 70s cartoon strip George and Lynne, is still with us. Turns 85 this year.

Found out 90s Finnish foreign minister Heikki Haavisto is still alive today and 85.

I'm suprised as he suffered an intracranial hemorrhage (around 25-50% mortality rate during the first four weeks, 82% ten years) in 1995 and was paralyzed. Had very unhealthy habits in the 80s and 90s,  and a couple of years before the ICH caused a car crash, drunk

Here he is at 80.

Let myself down badly at work today after being asked - on the basis of following celebrity deaths - whether Freddy Parrot Face Davis was still a going concern. Having expressed the opinion that he surely went a few years back I Googled the subject and discovered I was wrong and he's 81 this year.

thwaites.gif

Q/O obit a shoo-in as and when. His official site lists only masterclasses as gigs and doesn't specify any dates or venues for these. Also non-specific is the spelling of Freddy/Freddie which varies even on his official record - note the Freddy above whilst his biography is by Freddie

A reminder via Twitter that Freddie (seems to be the preferred spelling) is still going

And his Davis seems to have acquired an E.

..... oh wait, it might always have been there.  But another possible spelling anomaly.
