People I Was Surprised To Find Are Still Alive

Recommended Posts

Pete Seeger is easily famous enough, more so because the right on leftie types who write some broadsheet obits have sympathies with Seeger's sentiments. He'll get a boost this year when Bruce Springsteen releases a covers album including Seeger songs. In fact, according to some rumours The Boss's next collection will be nothing but Seeger songs.

She's not that flippin' old!

I was surprised both Moira Shearer and Freddie Laker were alive, well, until they were dead. I thought both had died years ago. I was particularly surprised not knowing about Shearer as she has a Eurovision connection (hosted in 1972 when the UK came second yet-a-bloody-gain)

I was amazed that John Profumo is still alive, I thought he's popped his clogs years ago. According to Wiki,

Profumo was elected before any other living former British MP, in 1940.

Interesting, one of the first things he did after being elected was to vote against Neville Chamberain - while wearing his army uniform!

He's done a heck of a lot of charity work since the Christine Keeler affair, but is looking very frail recently.

Yeah, like that charity work or the election in 1940 is the first thing people will think about when he dies.

What about George?

Currently wallowing in self-pity after Geoffrey left him for a young giraffe.Mind you there were other incidents.

I have to agree with you, he is utter shite!!

Anybody who has heard him murder " Santa Claus is coming to Town" must surely agree that he is nothing more than a Pub singer who by sheer luck or kissing the right C*** propelled himself to a stardom that he has never deserved!! <_<

I think that goes better under "People I Was Surprised To Find Existed."

I think that goes better under "People I Was Surprised To Find Existed."

Who is he?

He was one of the co-presenters/hosts of a practical joke show called "Game for a Laugh" and then later "Beedle's About"

I'm just surprised no-one's killed him yet.

Although it's hardly a claim to fame as being "I'm the one who shot Jeremy Beedle"

You'd either get a pat on the back or a blank look, followed by "Who?" :D

I think that goes better under "People I Was Surprised To Find Existed."

Who is he?

....perhaps Jeremy Beadle

I remember him from London's LBC radio in c.1980. He hosted a late night talk/quiz/prank show in which he regularly featured phonecalls to his mother. "Jeremy James Anthony Gibson Beadlebum" created a co- star in the person of the show's producer (whose name I've forgotten) and never failed to impress with his huge knowdege of American history.

Just as with The Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy, the move to the telly was not an improvement.

I seem to remember that he has a health problem - leukaemia?

Beadle is a bright guy but his face doesn't fit with the PC kiddies who run televison these days. He can dish it out but he can take it as well.

Wilford Brimley. I don't know if you've seen his TV ads, but he's had DIABETES for an eternity now. He's also up there, in his early 80's, I believe.

I'm afraid he will never die.

That was more info on Wilford Brimley than I ever needed to read.

Did his parents have a problem spelling the word " WILFRED"?

I noticed on Genarians.com that Paul Halmos, inventor of the tombstone notation for mathematical proofs, just turned 90. I would have thought he died years ago, but apparentely not. Not sure if he's famous enough though (being the pretentious universitwunt that I am), and for all I know he's in perfect health, but just thought I'd float that one out there.

Also, Momofuku Ando, turning 96, is the guy who basically invented Ramen. I'm was very surprised that he was still around.

Edith Shain, the woman being kissed in the famous Alfred Eisenstaedt VJ Day photograph.

No way famous enough for UK I'd think, but interesting nonetheless I think.

Robert Vaughn (The Man from UNCLE). I saw him in a trailer for a new TV programme. I thought he must have died years ago.
