Chad Varah

I think wev'e discussed him before but not sure he's had his own thread. The founder of The Samaritans was born in 1911.......and he's still alive. Time to phone home?

I guess he's built up a lot of good Karma,

Glancing at his Wiki profile it says he was closely associated with the founding of The Eagle comic.

An interesting chap.

Retired in 2003, but otherwise no word on his health that I could find. Is there anything to distinguish him from any other old guy?

Only the fun we'll have if he opts for euthanasia.

Will you not talk him out of it?

Actually he has a continuing long standing friendship with Dr Tuppy Owens - the campaigner for sexual freedom, champion of porn and driving force behind the annual London Sex Maniacs Ball (now renamed Night of the Senses). He is also known to UKrudegirl, another anti censorship campaigner. Bit of a lad really. <_<

Reveal yourself you unregistered guest you, do you - perchance - frequent this night of the senses yourself and, if so, would you care to comment on the staying power of a man born in 1911 so's the people in charge round here can decide whether to put him on next year's list?

On a separate note, our man is coming up 95 on November 12th. Link to basic Chad facts.

95 tomorrow, and still going strong. Maybe some of his friends will be round to help him celebrate and stay young.

Chad Varah is a truly exceptional man. As the man who set up (The) Samaritans, he is responsible for the ease of suffering of thousands, even tens of thousands, and unlike many this is a legacy that will continue long after his death. The Samaritans was the first ever helpline - today it is still the only UK helpline that operates 24 hours a day - although reaching out in many new ways unheard of in the 1950s, such as through e-mail and even text-message befriending.

I recently went to a talk by one of Chad Varah's sons who commented, "we're all surprised he's still alive!" The title of his autobiography - Before I Die Again - alludes to the fact that Chad Varah believes in reincarnation and, actually, is apparently looking forward to his death! I'm not sure what your list is about but yes, you could probably add him to this year's.

Not that I, for one, want him gone - whenever that may be. In a world where David Beckham and Jade Goody are role models, I'm old before my time when I reflect that it's people like Chad Varah we should look up to, not dumb celebrities who contribute very little, some nothing at all.

As for the point about euthenasia - I don't think the Rev. Chad Varah will be into that, for some reason...
