Dead Pop Stars

Jimmy Johnson, a top session musician and member of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, has died.  He was 76.  Second music-related Jimmy Johnson to die in the past couple of months, with the same-named Styx guitar tech dying in late July.

One to strike from my 1984 and 1985 TOTP theme teams (yes, same tune an outright hit in both years). Haven't checked later years, but wouldn't have qualified for this year's team.

Anyone who remembers Live Aid will feel a punch to the gut with this one. RIP.

Big swing and miss.  That’s the one big Cars hit sung by Benjamin Orr.  FAIL.

You are wasting your time with him.

The twat wasn't even born when they were charting.

I wasn't born when Spencer Perceval was shot - I still know he's the only Prime Minister (to date) to be assassinated in this country

I mean, there's always Wikipedia, right?

Sorry but non of these were hits in the Egyptian top 40.

And in UK, only known song is Drive you home. Don't hear them on capital FM tbh.

Very sad news :( I actually listened to side two of their last two albums on vinyl yesterday. Loved the magic video where Ric walked on water, awesome.

RIP, now you`re reunited with Ben!

Comparing former UK prime minister's to a one hit wonder is a bit of a silly comparison!

Some of the sales of 'My Best Friend's Girl' were undoubtedly due to it being issued as a picture disc, which was somewhat rare at the time. There was another single from the same era that charted purely due to it being issued on a square record.

The irony here is so funny

You say this guy is huge, but yet he does not have his own thread

Even the BBC lists him as the guy that wrote, drive

Obvs he was well known...mm

A very powerful song,  sung here by an uncredited Aimée Mann in a tense scene from The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

Well...we'll have to agree to disagree

Is it bad enough to deserve a fine of $2.9 million?

I was quite sad about this death until I realised that it was not about Gary Numan.

Kent Messenger reporting the death of Dave Kingsman aka Bill Kent - two non-charting singles for Decca in 1958 followed by a fleeting career as a popular live act in Canada. Notable to the insatiably music obsessed (okay, me) because he was signed to Decca by Dick Rowe and it's arguable that Rowe's faith a few who turned out to be chart failures had jaded him to the point that jading fuelled his decision in 1962 not to sign The Beatles

Link dead.  Hoax maybe?  Bad reporting?  No other reference to stroke yet.  It may appear of course.  If he’s ready to go up up and away...

Noticed it had been removed some hours later. Be the usual, someone's alerted a denial, yada yada.
