If you lined up all the remaining survivors of WWI and the Titanic for a race off against surviving Munchkins and Von Trapp singers who would win the tin of Soylent Green?

It would all depend on who and who doesn't have a motorized wheel chair. My money would be on the WW1 veterans.

Remember they would need to follow the yellow brick road. Munchkins know the way.

Only eight left now.
Did a bit of research on the net... and there's at least 14 still living

Mickey Carroll, Ruth Duccini, Jerry Maren, Margaret Pellgrini, Meinhardt Raabe and Karl Slover are the most well known ones as they're always making appearances on TV, at malls, Oz festivals etc. etc.

Then there's Olga C. Nardone... who well refuses to join the above 6 in making any appearances and has become a reclusive in her home in New England (perhaps due to a fear of "big people" :(... who knows)

In addition, an article in the LA Times mentions the names of four living child actresses from the film who were among about 12 girls who played munchkins as there weren't enough actors with dwarfism around to do the scene justice.

They are: Betty Ann Cain, 77; Priscilla Montgomery, 79; Ardith Dondanville, 78 (only recently discovered) and Joan Kenmore

Several Oz fansites mention Eva Lee Kuney, 74; Patsy May, 74 and Shirley Ann Kennedy as still being around..

There are also another 2 child actresses mentioned on the net: Viola White and Valerie Shepard.... there doesn't seem to be any info on whether they're still living but I'm presuming if they were then they'd only be in their mid-to-late 70s...

I was surprised by all the news reports on this munchkin's death.

I'm thinking, "Who the f*** cares?"

Must've been a very slow day for news.

He will not live when his next reelection in 2012 comes up. I have no problem with a Democrat that drops dead who has been a Socialist for forty plus years. The Senate needs new blood!

Who would you have fill his shoes? A crazy one-eyed hillbilly Republican?

What, like our crazy one-eyed Scotsman?

Well they're very respected in the US... probably due to amount of travelling they do across the country and the countless events they attend. Let's be honest how many of us are going to be attending festivals and conventions when we're in our late 80s/early 90s??

I think the fact that they're dwarfs also makes interesting reading for an obituary... dwarfs don't usually live very long due the they're organs being closely compacted and thus giving them a crap immune system....

I suppose you prefer trolls to Munchkins? The Wizard of Oz was and is a popular and iconic film, one that everyone has at least heard of, personally I don't care for it but I acknowledge its popularity. The surviving Munchkins are the last link to the film, unless you count Deanna Durbin who was almost Dorothy, and as such their deaths are bound to be newsworthy. I also think it's rather nice that the "little guys" are having the last laugh having outlived everyone when you consider that they weren't shown much respect on set.

A short article in the free paper this morning

A community of dwarves has set up its own village to escape discrimination from normal sized people.

Everyone in the mountain commune in Kunming, southern China, must be under 4ft 3ins tall - and they run their own police force and fire brigade from their 120 residents.

Now the group has turned itself into a tourist attraction by building mushroom houses and living and dressing like fairy tale characters.

I notice the writer of that article managed to go the whole way without using the word "dwarf" once apart from in a quote. I wonder how he(?) would tackle a piece on Snow White? Snow White and the seven severely short men? This could be a trend with revised WWII accounts of severely short submarine attacks.

I think we could have had a better thread if they'd been in WW1. Hell, they'd have been made for the trenches, imagine the scare the Germans would have had shooting an oncoming six foot soldier in the head only to see the top of his body fall off and his uniform still advancing! They could've snuck up through no man's land without being detected and......

Get me Michael Winner on the phone, it's the kind of high concept idea he loves!

Reading through this thread again I'm thinking this point has a bit more mileage. If you take MPFC's argument as sound and you add it to the skills of Rusty Goffe, the bouncing weatherman, you could see how a regiment of athletic dwarfs equipped with trampolines at the base of their trenches, could have stopped any enemy advance in WW1. The "now-you-see-me-now-you-don't" approach would have made them sniper proof. It could have led to a whole new strategy and would have certainly shortened the war.

Munchkin Karl Slover dies aged 93.

According to the report, he was the lead trumpeter.

There appear to be three still alive: Jerry Maren (91), Margaret Pellegini (88) and Ruth Duccini (93).

Jerry Maren no longer does his annual appearance at the Minnesota State Fair, last time I saw him there was a couple of years ago. He also used to do appearances at the Mall of America. He's a cantankerous gt and will most likely be the last one left alive.

Solemn obituary

"There will be no funeral for Slover, since midgets are just flushed down the toilet when they die, and because people would chase the midgets if they all congregated in one spot, due to the fact that midgets have to grant you a wish if you catch them. Another danger is that midgets can become aggressive if they’ve just laid their eggs"

This is probably the best thread to announce the death of Dr David Rimoin, the world's leading authority on dwarfism.

Dr. Rimoin cherished an honorary lifetime membership in Little People of America.

That's a shame. Had I known I may have included him a team of mine since I too played the part of a flying monkey in our junior school play when we did the Wizard of Oz..
