Irene Sutcliffe who was Maggie Clegg on Coronation Street from 1968-1975 has died aged 88.

Particularly relevant to the thread title – she played Betty's sister. In fact, it seems Maggie was there first, and Betty was only introduced later to give her someone to bounce off.

Betty had an illegitimate son named Gordon and gave him up to her married sister Maggie to raise.

OMG, I'm turning into Deathray.  :o  Where's me sock?

Freddie Jones has died.

Didn't last long after retirement - sadly not too common (Either because of illness or the sudden stopping work at such an old age finishes you off.) - going by social media he seemed to have attended a photoshoot recently.

I didn't know he *was* in Emmerdale. That's a huge loss.

Seems to be a sudden rush of deaths ! I remember Freddie Jones best from all those Hammer horror films he did back in the 60s and 70s. Sorry to see him go.

Freddie Jones was one of this country's finest character actors. Relegating him to this thread kinda does him an injustice.

He will always be one of those Ghosts of Motley Hall to me. Although his appearance in Never Too Young To Rock is one of the moments of my formative days! Here's a bit of it...

I remember him from Crossroads, iirc he played a postman - friend of Vince Parker!

Yes, he should be in the British Character Actors thread as well.

He's also the father of Toby Jones, another great character actor.
