Sorry for the terrible job with the cut and paste by me.  Adrian Wojnarowski added that Stern collapsed at the Brasserie 8.5 Restaurant in Manhattan today and was rushed to the hospital for the emergency surgery.

Grim reaper ain't messing around.  Barely the first day of 2020 and we already have a major celebrity death.   Although he wasn't a famous athlete, he was just as well known to sports fans as the likes of Michael Jordan and Larry Bird.  He served as commissioner to the NBA for 30 years and was seen as the one responsible for transforming the NBA into the global brand it is today.

Sports fans are in mourning today.

Fun trivia: Every single Scottish NBA player has died at age 39.

Hudson County (FL) has lost a member of its basketball royalty.

Alice DeFazio, arguably the county first women’s star player, died on Feb. 25 in Florida. She was 63.

A three-time Hall of Famer — Jersey City, Hudson County and Montclair State University — DeFazio was a star at every level of competition. Among her many achievements was helping lead Montclair State to the women’s basketball Final 4 as the starting point guard.   Two years later, as a senior, DeFazio was the runner-up for the Wade Trophy — the annual award given to the best player in the nation.

Meh, close enough thread.

Fred Klein, the longest-tenured New York Knicks season-ticket holder dating to 1959, died Saturday of coronavirus.

Klein, who lived in Manhattan his entire life, was 85. Klein caught the coronavirus in a nursing home, though originally it was deemed just pneumonia.

According to the obit, Knicks owner James Dolan ALSO has tested positive for C19!  SSHHHHH don't tell Cup players or anyone!

Its not often you have a choice of basketball thread or Star Wars thread for a death notice, but Mark McNamara, who has died aged 60, presents such an opportunity.

A former NBA champion with the Philadelphia '76ers, McNamara stood in for Peter Mayhew during filming when Mayhew had health issues exacerbated by wearing his Chewbacca outfit. Unfortunately for McNamara, none of his scenes made the final cut, as he walked differently from Mayhew.
