Magic Johnson, And Other Basketball Players

Joe Williams, who led Jacksonville University to the 1970 NCAA Tournament national title game against John Wooden’s UCLA team (they lost to UCLA 80-69), passed away on Saturday.

He was 88 years old.

Williams passed away in hospice care following a cancer battle.

Williams started out as an assistant at Furman before taking the head coaching job at Jacksonville University.

He coached at JU for six seasons before returning to Furman for the head coaching position.

Herb Turetzky, who was the Nets’ official scorer for 54 years across multiple leagues and states, has died. He was 76.

The Nets said Turetzky, who retired before this season, died Monday. They did not provide a cause of death.

The last coach to take Purdue to the Final Four in men’s basketball, Lee Rose, has died at the age of 85 in Charlotte.

Rose came to Purdue after having taken North Carolina-Charlotte to the Final Four in 1977. His coaching stops included Transylvania (160-57 record in eight seasons), Charlotte (72-18 in three seasons), Purdue (50-18 in two seasons) and South Florida (106-69 in six seasons). After leaving South Florida, a program he helped establish in Tampa, he became an NBA assistant for the San Antonio Spurs, New Jersey Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Charlotte Hornets.

One of the all-time great mountain basketball players has passed away. Lisa Collins, the Laurel County executive who led the county to unprecedented success in the late 1970s, died at the age of 59.

Collins won Kentucky Miss Basketball in 1980 and went on to play at UK after leading the Cardinals to three Sweet 16 titles in a row from 1977 and 1979.

Aaliyah Gayles, a University of Southern California women’s basketball commit, was reportedly shot ten times at a house party over the weekend outside of Las Vegas.

Gayles was one of four people wounded after a fight broke out at the party. The 18-year-old point guard, one of the top players in the country in the 2022 class, has had two emergency surgeries on Sunday (April 17) to address the injuries. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports she is awake and recovering.

6-foot-11 Jeremy Eaton was a key component of Gonzaga’s 1999 Elite Eight team that first lifted the Zags into the national consciousness. He played professionally in international leagues for a number of years afterward and ended up in Nampa, Idaho, feeding his competitive nature with the roping competitions he’d done since he was young.

Eaton’s died after a year-long stage four cancer battle at age 45.

Bob Lanier, a Hall of Fame NBA player and one of the league`s best in the 1970s, has died. He was 73. Lanier, a legendary centre who played 14 seasons with the Detroit Pistons and Milwaukee Bucks, died after a short illness.

Former Indiana Mr. Basketball and McDonald's All American Caleb Swannigan, who committed to Purdue after initially committing to Michigan State, died at only 25 years:

He coached Real Madrid from 1959 -75 where he won 12 Spanish League Titles and 4 Euroleague titles

Hall of famers Havlicek/KC Jones and Sam Jones leave one by one in 2019,2020 and 2021

I just noticed that 5 of the 6 players to have won 8 or more nba championships as a player have died since 2019
