Nope, haven't heard of any of them, unlike the State list as I'd heard of all of them.

I guess Interior secretaries don't get around much.

My sister mentioned Robert Hays today, he played Ted Striker in the Airplane films. She said she'd heard nothing about him since his last film in 96'.

Becoming a recluse maybe? ( Robert Hays, not my sister. )

Anyone know anything???

Lynne Perrie's funeral doesn't provide much interest for DL'rs but Paul Shane is looking a bit rough. Probably not known outside Britain, but obese, mid 60's, he's been my outside DDP bet for some while, but I don't have the courage.. yet.. to move him up. But looking at him at this funeral, well who knows?

One more comment - her son & her husband look the same age!

I too considered roly-poly funny man Ted Bovis for my DDP team, but rejected him on the grounds that he was elected an ambassador of Rotherham in 2004.

A spurious reason maybe, but there you go.

Defense

1. Donald Rumsfeld (G.W. Bush)

2. William Cohen (Clinton)

3. William Perry (Clinton)

4. Frank Carlucci (Reagan)

5. Harold Brown (Carter)

6. James R. Schlesinger (Nixon/Ford)

7. Melvin Laird (Nixon)

8. Robert McNamara (Kennedy/Johnson)

Somebody said that Defense Secretaries are well known in Europe. I'm curious if that is only because the current Secretary is such a...twunt? Is that the correct term?

I've only heard of the above three. The first two 'cos they're recent, the last one 'cos he's on the DDP. Not exactly a ringing endorsement...

For a British site, why aren't you doing the same lists, but for UK politicians? Or is that to come?

Prince Tomohito of Japan

The 60-year-old Japanese prince is suffering from throat cancer and underwent surgery on Feb 28th this year. He is currently receiving chemotherapy and also suffers from an irregular heartbeat.

Between 1991 and 2003, he has had at least 6 operations to remove tumors from his esophagus and tongue, so he is definitely worth some consideration. The only drawback is that he may not pass the famous enough category.

For a British site, why aren't you doing the same lists, but for UK politicians? Or is that to come?

There are a couple reasons:

1. My ethnocentricity makes me inclined to look for obscure politicians from America.

2. The general rule is that a UK obit is required to establish fame, and most of these people will get at least a blurb when they die on BBC.

3. This site gives me the opportunity to publish, as it were, the fruits of my morbid research.

4. I'll probably get to the British after these lists because this has become a weird sort of hobby for me.

5. When I start making lists of living Bratislavian politicians, it will be time to stop.

Does anybody (barring US farmers) really give a damn about the US agriculture secretary.

Stick to the Cabinet big shots, not these bunch of nobodys.

9. Earl Butz (Nixon/Ford)

When I was young and still lived in Canada, I thought that Secretary of Agriculture was a mde up position. Earl Butz is not only the oldest living cabinet member, but also one of the most infamous for being fired for one his racist comments. I think he'd be a fair candidate and probably would easily get a BBC obit given his reputation. The others, probably not so much.

Point of order...many of them would fulfill the DDP qualification of getting a UK obit. At least I'm putting out some new or original people. Over the past couple days it seems like people keep putting up common repeaters (I think Vonnegut and Hugh Hefner.)

But how many of these people on the lists are very elderly or ailing?

Err.. I don't think nearly any of them would, unless the current one dropped dead. Point of order.. Mitchell Sharp, the ex-Canadian Foreign Minister, which is quite a notable role, got NO BBC mention & only one obituary, one week after his death, back in 2004. I consider Sharp to be at the same level of "famousness" as these.

These people, in the UK, are true nobodies. Here, no-one's ever heard of them, no-one will miss them, no-one cares. Some of the more "controversial" or "long-stayers" might, but it isn't a given.

Thanks, LBa5o'C for some original names.

However, I think anyone from agriculture down is unlikely to get an obit. I've heard of just two of them & that's because they are recent.

I was driving along yesterday and thought of someone who I hadn't heard of for ages and wondered if they were still alive. Sadly I can't remember who it was but I think he/she might have made a good candidate for the list. I think it may have been a man, if that is any help.
