What's to stop him for passing the baton straight to William? I'd be wanting an even more cushy life I was in my 70s, especially with that old nag to feed and muck-out also!

Charles has waited for this moment for his entire life. He isn't going to give it all up now

I wonder if my local pub will be packed tonight? The BBC news at 10, could break all ratings records.

Only if she has passed by then.

It'll probably happen just before to save the inconvenience and expense of a multi-network newsflash.

Closest I can see is William IV acceded in June 1830, then Charles Grey became PM in November

Was just talking to my plasterer about this news and he said his mate actually works for security surrounding the queen and that last week he was on the phone all day and said I should be getting paid for all this. The man supposedly said that it will be absolute mayhem next week, I guess he knew even something back then the full story he did not share with his friend.

If she dies tonight, Charles will immediately become King. There won't be time for any public debate.

The republicans have missed the boat for probably the next five years barring violent public uprising and overthrow of the political order

Almost 25 years to the day where William and Harry were both at Balmoral finding out that their mother passed away.

He'll be 74 in November.  I can't imagine that he will carry on until 95 or whatever - I reckon he'll abdicate after 10-12 years.

I don't really have anything to add that hasn't already been said, but I'm impressed at how the DL servers are holding up so far

If she passes away, it may be one of the most massive events of this century.

It depends on how you define it.  Ultimately it's just the death of an old lady, nothing more.  The issue is that people in this country venerate the monarchy.

7 members of the Royal Household should be landing at Aberdeen Airport within 10 mins or so.
