Looks like the U.S. thought he may try to slip back into Afghanistan after the Fall of Kabul, which is exactly what he did. Let his guard down, got complacent and they got him. The attempt to kill John Caldwell in Omagh has led to five arrests amd widespread reporting that the New IRA are behind it.in 2022 ten of their people got arrested. I'm thinking there aren't that many of them to start with and everytime they do something highly public they lose operational staff to arrest.
