Godot, I completely agree with you. Sometimes, listening to Barry Davies was a joy, but for every moment of commentating genius, he ruined it by moaning. I think you hit the nail spot on & bang! Still, BD was far better than the current new crop of football commentators (Tydelsley especially).

 

Arlott was class personified. Reading supporter too, so he had excellent taste!!

Sad to know that the old perv Stuart Hall is the only survivor from that list.It really is true that only the good die young !

As Blowers has been mentioned, it seems an appropriate time to remind everyone that another former TMS commentator, Neil Durden-Smith is still alive, aged 87.  He commentated from 1969 to 1974, which ought to be enough to earn him an obit, but he was also Aide-de-camp of the NZ governor-general Lord Cobham. If that still doesn't get him an obit he can fall back on being Judith Chalmers' husband.

And in that case is presumably the father of two-bit TV presenter Mark Durden-Smith who still pops up from time to time though not as much as he did a decade ago.

Upon looking up the old rugby international, Wiki reveals that Nigel Starmer-Smith has dementia and been living in a care home for ages.

 

(I state I pay no heed to Wiki facts, but it's something). Edit: The piece is on Twitter, I had a quick look. Awful, but inspiring to listen to his son.

Although it's the football that was his largest body of work, I'll forever remember him for his brilliant commentary from 1992 and the rowing when the Searles beat the Abergnales. I'm sure there's a you tube link somewhere but no idea how to inbed it.

I do recall the scandal when he was caught knocking one out in a porn cinema. A moment lovingly recreated by Viz's Roger Mellie strip wherein Roger was similarly apprehended and responded by asking what his ticket price had been paid for if he wasn't able to pleasure himself to the money shot moment.

Do you know I dimly recalled there being some sort of Bough-esque thing that happened in connection with him years and years ago. Thanks for the memories (or mammeries, in his case?).
