maryportfuncity 10,673 Posted April 24, 2007 Some respect is due to Workington AFC - aka Workington Reds - gained a precious point tonight, pulled a whapping 576 into Borough Park in the process, and already had their play-off place in Conference North secured. If they achieve the dizzy heights of the Conference it's anyone's guess how many they'll take away to Torquay next season.

What is your mate, Ian, doing with his right hand? I'm undecided between whether he's cocking an imaginary finger pistol, stroking his nipple or about to offer Matty some strange, mutated Masonic handshake. Not since TLC's profile photo have I seen such interesting fingers. That photo wasn't taken in the pub, Le Tissier's Feet, by any chance was it? Also someone seems to have left a rotting garden shed in the ground. I would follow Exeter City to hell, but I might have to draw the line at Workington! I'd say 'characterful' it's had a lick of paint and a little attention since that picture. Stuart Clarke who takes the bulk of the Homes of Football pictures and lives near Carlisle specialises in getting a rustic flavour when and where he can. The man's a genius when it comes to making a bunch of - basically - similar places look very different. He was assigned to Carlisle for a year in the mid-nineties and I got to know him a bit. If Wukkie fluke a Conference place - considered unlikely by those in the know hereabouts - the thought of trekking to Torquay, Exeter and several other Southern hideouts will daunt even their most dedicated fans. Carlisle can rely on a fair tonnage of exiles living down there to swell the Blue Army, certainly around London. Workington has always been a local club and hasn't got anything like Carlisle's well organised London Branch amongst the support. One of the books written about Carlisle United put's it succinctly: 'For years, those born within easy travelling distance of Workington have been choosing to trek up the A596 and watch Carlisle.' Cheers, BHB i think he's gone for a 'Look its Matt Le Tissier' double fingered style point with a bit of pistol thrown in for good measure. it was in the Central in Newquay. maryportfuncity 10,673 Posted April 26, 2007 Poor old Lancaster City, bottom of the Nationwide Conference North may be the first team to end a season with no points Still progress mind, they started with minus 10. Problem is, the mighty power of Workington and the other titans in that league has left them struggling.

Dr Hackenslash 25 Posted April 29, 2007 So Gretna managed to win, . Watch them tumble straight back down. To be fair, there are worse teams in the SPL and one of them will still be there next season - Pars or Buddies. And that must be the closest league finish since Liverpool and Arsenal in the 80s. honez 79 Posted April 29, 2007 Hearty congratulations to the Chester City lads for another nondescript season and all the best to Boston and Macclesfield next Saturday in their combined attempts to send Wrexham to the Conference netherworld (no offence, Conference fans ) I'd hardly call it a non-descript season for Chester. After all, they managed to sneak one point off Wrexham out of two games. That's usually stellar season for Chester.

maryportfuncity 10,673 Posted April 29, 2007 MPFC's Carlisle f**k up right at the end after a storming final third of the season Bit harsh I'd say, easily matched Swansea over the 90 minutes the one notable f**k up being a missed begging chance mid-second half when Johann Smith went for glory rather than passing to Chris Lumsdon in a perfect scoring position. Then again, a positive end to the home season and the team applauded all round Brunton Park by a support happy we've got a good manager and impressed at the way he's dismantled the old squad with youthful replacements. Assuming Notts Forest go up via the play-offs I'm not sure we need fear anyone in League One next year. Leeds - despite the pedigree - are still in serious trouble. Roll on next season. Oh aye, and in a result that provoked laugh out loud responses after the Swansea game Lancaster City - doomed to finish last - got a point at - already assured of a play-off place - Workington. Basically giving both what they wanted. Allegedly a game so pedestrian the Wukkie players ran minimal injury risk ahead of their nail-biting campaign for a conference place. Sounds like the Dutch Eredivisie league had an equally close finish today, with PSV edging out Ajax on goal difference as the erstwhile leaders Alkmaar slipped to 3rd. Maybe it's time to give Rushie another go Or perhaps it's all connected with Big Sam's hurried and mysterious departure from Bolton...?

With that level of gloating you might be accused of being a Man Utd fan in disguise, judging by the various forums and blog comments on the internet in the last few days.... I hope Exeter go up, although it would be nice for a new team to enter the Football League. Have Morecambe been there before? You can imagine the headline if there was a League Cup tie between Leeds and Morecambe....
