Scoreless draw.

Slovenia haven't conceded a goal at home in the qualifiers. Highly unlikely now. Also, read in the papers Scotland have never won 4 World Cup qualifiers in a row. Can't be arsed to check, but it sounds like the kind of thing that'd be true.

Back in the day msc , the home internationals were the qualifying group for each tournament.

That must have stopped early 70s.

^ Looking it up, stopped around 1958! Scotland thumped Spain to qualify that year, which is how you can tell it was 60 years ago...

Used the Home Nations for Euro 68 though.

Simpler back the.

Sure I've posted afore about the 66 WC,  being the boycott one.

The Free State got Spain and Syria <<aye, Syria. Syria withdrew leaving the ROI to play 3 times, 1 win, 1 loss and a playoff

05/05/65: Dublin: Ireland 1-0 Spain
Jose Angel Iribar Cortajarena 61 og

27/10/65: Seville: Spain 4-1 Ireland
Pereda 40,43, 58, Lapetra 63 / Andy McEvoy 26

Playoff Football Match:
10/11/65: Paris: Spain 1-0 Ireland
Ufarte 80

Scotland won't qualify again until Putin gets his act together and unifies Eastern Europe imo

Hey,  how about a list of rude, lewd or silly footballers names?

Following on from Ufarte - Spain, how about Quim - Portugal and Kuntz - Germany?

Any more?

^ Wife nearly died laughing - either CL or Euro 2008, something round that time. ITV commentator talking about "Zhirkov (which he pronounced Jerkoff) putting in a shift at the Wankdorf here..."

Aston Villa had, in the sixties, Hector and Oscar Arce on their books. I recall an episode of Baddiel & Skinner's Fantasy Football mentioning  a midfield line-up of 'Brown, Arce, Hole', though if that did happen, it would have been in the reserves.

In that case, let us once again enjoy the Sun's back page headline about West Ham's line-up:

Moments silence for DDP would be Eberhard van der Laan before tonights World Cup game in Amsterdam.

Apt, as the Dutch World Cup hopes will be deader than a mayor come 10pm...

Greatest football magazine ever IMO. Football's equivalent to Smash Hits/NME, whereas today you have Four Four Two, which is Q, basically...
