Whilst some Premiership teams complain about fixture congestion, spare a thought for Northwich Victoria, who are going to need to complete their 9 remaining fixtures in the next 18 days! i think torquay will bounce back. hope so anyway. Aye, sympathy to them. Played well at Carlisle last year when our championship and their survival were both at stake in our final home game. They beat us fair and square and a load of us ended our traditional end of season pitch invasion by advancing on the Torquay support and applauding them. I'd like to suggest Everton and Aston Villa but I'd also like to get clarification on how far back we are going - weren't there southern and northern divisions at the turn of last century - though these may be equal to the third division a.k.a League one these days, I'm not sure. I think we should petition the FA to reinstate Div 1 through 4. It's more like a non-competitive sports day these days with league ONE actually being the third divsion...does this happen anywhere else in the world...? After coming up with a few more potentials I decided to hit google - it really does depend on your source of information. What I did find is that in the begining (Genesis 1888 - 1889) the football league was found and it was good. In the first season there were 12 clubs and they were good. Preston NE, Villa, Wolves, Everton, Blackburn, Bolton, WBA, Accrington (who are they?), Burnley, Derby, Notts County, Stoke. I'm not sure on what day Accrington rested but I guess it's a case of eliminating a few from the list (though I suspect that will only leave me with Everton - I've subsequently been told that Villa have had a few seasons in Hades). Hence I am guessing there is a cut of point and we're not supposed to start from the founding of the league after all... I'm still sticking with Everton though. No. From joining the league, all the ten top teams have been in a league that is counted as either the 1st or 2nd tier at that time. Boston have only been in the fourth tier as a league club. Judging by the replies, it seems you need some kind of criteria as to what defines unsuccessful. And are we talking about former league clubs who were in the football league for a while before? I mean, it can be argued that Reading haven't been that successful, considering how long we've been in the league, as we have won lots at lower level, but not much at higher.
