The Canadian Paul Deadpool

Recommended Posts

So I've been doing a lot of thinking on this whole "Deadpool" concept. I've been hearing a lot of complaints about how the sick and elderly are easy pickings, and about how there's little reward for style in Deadpools these days.

Thus, I have come up with what I believe to be the solution: The Canadian Paul Deadpool

First of all, I'll say excuse the mess, but for now the site is merely for functionality, not for looks. Once the contest is underway, I'll make it look a lot prettier. In particular, I'm more than aware that the front page is far too busy, but my graphics guy should hopefully be kind enough to fix all that up for me.

Most importantly, if you want to skip the mess that is the front page, are the rules. I've tried to twist them to accomodate style in Deadpool picks, where a team with 6 out of 10 hits can be outscored by one with half as many or less given the right contestants. Most importantly, there's two important things to note:

1) The contest starts in late (and since it took me forever to get the site operational, very late) September to discourage people from choosing candidates that they're saving for the DDP. Since no one wants to give away their list early, hopefully we'll see some interesting candidates mixed in with people you'd expect to see.

2) There are two separate contests - one regular to choose any 10 candidates that you'd like and one "Theme Team," where teams can take a more unique and personalized approach to Deadpooling.

Complete rules can be found on the rules page and, as I've mentioned on the main page, I'm extending the entry deadline to September 22 since it took me forever to get some bugs worked out with site (which as you'll be able to tell, is barely presentable as it is).

If anyone thinks of a really good bonus or penalty to help aid the "style" aspect of the game, let me know before the 22nd and I may include it.

Special thanks goes out to OoO, who reviewed the rules and site before I announced to everyone. :)

I look forward to some interesting entries in the next fortnight. :P

Impressive job with the website, CP, even though it is just in the initial stages. One minor corection though. Under the list of approved news sources, cnn is "Cable News Network" and not "Central News Network"

Looks overly complicated to me, keep it simple says I.

Too much for a bear of little brain like me.

It's not at all complicated TF and my brain is much smaller than yours, only it's not scrambled by alcohol just now.

You don't find this overly complicated?

Then you're a smarter than the average bear Godot.

points for a basic death. The scoring system past this is detailed, but simple.

Bonuses:

Unique Pick Bonus: As is standard, any unique pick automatically earns +1 bonus point.

Infarction Bonus: Any pick whose official cause of death is attributed to a Cardiovascular Infarction (Heart Attack) or a Stroke earns +1 bonus point

Accident Bonus: Any pick who dies in an accident will earn the picker +2 points. An accident can be defined (but is not limited to) the following:

Fall

Plane or Automobile Crash

Non-Assassination/Murder Related Explosion

Drug Overdose

Acts of nature (Flood, Hurricane, Earthquake, Volcano)

It does not include the following: Explosions related to targeted assassination/murder attempts

Suicide

Homicide

Genocide

Cartoon Bonus: Any pick who has done a guest voice on The Simpsons or King of the Hill earns +1 bonus point. Any pick who has done a guest voice on Family Guy gets +2 bonus points. Any pick who has done a guest voice on South Park garners +3 bonus points.

Canadian Bonus: Every "Canadian" on your list past the first who carks it is worth +1 (cummulative) bonus points per death. Thus, if you had 10 "Canadians" on your list, and all of them died, the last would gain a +9 bonus to their death score.

Porn Star Bonus: Any pick who has had a part in at least one pornographic film (however small) is worth +2 bonus points if they shuffle off this mortal coil.

Female Bonus: Since males tend to vastly outnumber females on most deadpools, all females on your team are worth +1 bonus point

Godot's Belgian Bonus: Every pick on your team that is "Belgian" (defined similarly to "Canadian") is worth +1 bonus point.

OoO's Ethiopian Bonus: Every pick on your team that is "Ethopian" (defined similarly to "Canadian") is worth +1 bonus point.

TLC & Six's Bodyguard Bonus: Any pick who, at one time or another, worked as a bodyguard in some capacity is worth +1 bonus point. For this catagory, the burden of proof is on the team who selects the person, aside from people that Canadian Paul already knows about (ie. Mr. T, The Iron Shiek et al.)

Penalties:

84 or Over Penalty: Since 84 is the average lifespan of human beings (and by average I mean, number that I completely made up and am using for this contest), -1 point for any choices on your list who is 84 years of age or older at the time of death.

15 or Under Penalty: -3 points for any choice who is 15 years of age or younger at the time of picking (note: this is not the same as time of death).

Famous For Being Famous: A subjective catagory, but anyone deemed "famous for being famous" will be worth -1 point upon the time of death. Generally death row inmates who did not commit a crime that garnered national attention, relatives of legitamtely famous people, Titanic Survivors, war veterans that are significant only for being war veterans, current world and national longevity holders, British Lords that Canadian Paul has never heard of and more or less anyone who is significant for having outlived everyone else in some category will suffer in points.

Cancer Penalty: Any pick whose official cause of death is attributed to some form of Cancer is worth -1 point. This penalty does not apply if the person has (or had) cancer, but did not die of it.

TEAMS:

Each team may submit up to two lists of 10 people each. One list may contain any persons of the team's choosing, so long as they pass the fame test. The second team (if desired) must be a "Theme Team," whose picks consists entirely of selections based on a certain theme. For example, Canadian Paul's Theme Team is "Rappers and Hoes," made up entirely of rappers and porn stars. No two teams may select the same theme, and it's first come, first serve for themes. Themes can be as specific as you'd like, so long as you can find 10 candidates to fit the theme (ie. people from Winnipeg, rowing medalists in the 2004 Olympics etc.). They may also be as broad as the national level (ie. Russians is an acceptable theme, Europeans and Earthlings are not). The Theme Team does not have to have any "Canadians" on it, and for Theme Teams, the Canadian Bonus is applied starting with the first death. Thus a "Canadian Team" could acquire a +10 bonus on its last pick if they all died. Theme Teams are not restricted to avoid themes that take advantage of the bonus system, and thus "Cartoon Theme," "Belgian Theme" etc. are all perfectly acceptable. The candidacy for the team must (aside from the Canadian rule) also fit the rules for the main team, and their eligibility as candidates for that theme must be reasonably verifiable by Canadian Paul (ie. "People I Don't Like" and "People my sister saw on TV last night" are not acceptable). Also, Theme Teams "Men" and "Women" count as being broader than the national level, just for the record.

Themes are encouraged to be interesting. Each year, the Canadian Paul Deadpool council will convene and select the three most interesting team themes and award each team a bonus of +5 points. Council members, including Canadian Paul, are ineligible for this bonus. Thus, it is the onus of those creating the theme teams to select one that is both interesting and contains people with a realistic chance of dying.

To further encourage interesting picks, the obituary requirements are relaxed for theme teams. All that is required is an English-language obituary, online or otherwise.

If any celebrity dies between the time you selected them and the time they died, you will be given 24 hours from the time that their death is reported on a major or Canadian news network to replace them with a living person. If you fail to meet this deadline, your team will be short one less choice, so be wary!

VICTORY:

There are two winning lists declared at the end of each year of play, one Theme Team winner and one non-theme team winner. Prizes include mention on in the "Winners" section of the website and the satisfaction of knowing that you're better than everyone else at something. Winners under the "Theme Team" catagory also get first dibs at themes.

It's not so complicated if you take the time to read it. Although [for example] chances are I wouldn't list a canadian on my team. I'm not really for that rule, since if there are no famous canadian celebritys fitting at that time, it would be unnecessary to list them. I would bend the rules. But overall I think Canadian Paul has done a great job, putting his very own Dead Pool together.

Ladies and gentleman Tempus Fugit is so unaware of what he is saying, he forgets how I could gruesomely take advantage of his statements and words. Since his mind is being kept company, I will ingnore any serious direct actions today'

I'll admit that certain parts, especially the Theme Team section, are a bit wordy and detailed. Problem is, for the theme team idea to work, it has to go into what can or cannot be done so that people are sort of forced to go along with the spirit of Theme Teams instead of manipulating it to basically create a second "anyman" team. I don't claim to be clever enough to have blocked all possible abuses, but hopefully I've hit on the most obvious ones.

How does this work, exactly? Are we virgins until we join a pool or until we get a first hit?

nice work CP. Some interesting wrinkles to it. For my Canadian pick, can I have "any one Trudeau", or need I be more specific?

Oh, how exciting!! I love the Theme Team idea... I just need a lot of quiet time to compile my lists and create an interesting theme. The kid's will be having no dinner today... no tea either... poor souls.

Might be time for me to pop my dead pool cherry too, especially as one category is half named after me.

I'd be surprised to get any points at all, my picks will be about as well considered as my posts.

Would Kevin Costner count as a bodyguard? If I'm going to get him neutralised anyway (in bodyguard parlance) it may as well be worth a few extra points. You can see the serious thought going into my selections already, I fancy.

I fear my teams may become wish lists rather than being made up of people who might actually die. I wonder if the cast of dinnerladies regularly travel to rehearsals (if they have them) in the same coach? If so, I'm applying for the driver's job and will risk the ultimate price for some sort of massive dead pool score by 'accidentally' falling asleep at the wheel whilst heading for Land's End. And I'll be performing a massive public service, so perhaps a posthumous award of some sort will be bestowed upon me? :D

Interesting Canadian Paul, well interesting. Do you happen to know where online I could find the definitive guide to Canadian porn stars, it's not summat that's greatly troubled my life so far but it might be a useful bit of research this month.

Incidentally, Lara Roxx is Canadian ain't she?

So basically, except for the people mentioned in the rules and yourself, we have 4 days remaining to pick a team with such a complex points system?

How fun.

I suppose I could give it a go.

Forget the last request.

Canadian porn stars aplenty, as always you only need to ask wiki.
