Canadian Paul 97 Posted July 23, 2007 When is the entry deadline, CP? I have my theme team ready but I'm going on holiday late August & don't want to miss the cut off point.(Sad, I know, putting CPDP deadlines in front of holiday fun ) I finally got around to updating the home page from the weird start we got last year, but the entry span is August 18 - September 1. Of course, no harm done if you submit it earlier, I just won't be specifically checking the account for them until then though. The only caveat is that the winner of the Theme Team this year will get first dibs on Theme Team next year. So if they happen to pick the same theme as you, you're SOL. Which reminds me, theme team priority will be as follows (as per the old rules): 1. Winner of the Theme Team category gets first pick. 2. People who had the theme last year can lay claim to it this year. 3. If it's a new theme or an abandoned old one, then whoever asks first gets it. If someone gives you the boot on a theme team and the official deadline passes, you'll still have until I post the candidates and teams (which will be a while) to submit a new one. All this will be in the updated rules that I'll be posting early August.
Octopus of Odstock 2,203 Posted July 23, 2007 Right ho, as I'm on holiday during that span time, I'll be entering early. I won't have the same theme team as before, in case anyone else wants to pick a whole load of evil despots.
Canadian Paul 97 Posted July 24, 2007 I should also note that the email address for the competition will remain cpdp2006, for reasons that include laziness and the chance that some wise guy could reserve future years of the competition by registering them on gmail. Think of it as referring to the year the competition started or something. Also, if anyone wants Rappers and Hoes (I doubt it) they can take it - rappers and porn stars did die this CPDP season, but it's just too random to make much sense of it. James Bond Stars has been mentioned as one of the more interesting teams for the bonus points, so don't count yourself out just yet! Anyhow, site updated to reflect the death of Lee Hazlewood, putting myself in second place but still not within striking distance of Fuckety. I also uploaded the new rules for next year but, being lazy, forgot to highlight the changes. For those of you on the mailing list, I copied them out there and to those who aren't, they're pasted in the previous page of this thread.
maryportfuncity 10,657 Posted August 14, 2007 CP Your inbox is full so I can't send you my theme team idea for next year, so - mebbe - I'll share it with the group. An idea: I appreciate the low hanging fruit jibes this year so how's about I enter a 'nul point' team next time? In other words, I'm gambling I can pick ten conspiciously endangered people who'll still be breathing in 365 days. I'm thinking a few assassination targets - presidents of Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and Pakistan - a few public f**k ups like Doherty, Winehouse and Houston and some conspicious oldsters for good measure. Success - in this case - is nul points. Is that a goer or not?

Success - in this case - is nul points. Is that a goer or not? CRAP - Cumbria's Remarkably Alive Pool? I think it's a good idea. Then again I'm new to all this deadpooling malarkey. I just had a look at the rules of this one and it looks like one needs 25 hours in the day to come up with something. Is there a random button that just automatically picks a team that sticks to all the bylaws like in fantasy football? Either that or I'll ask people to message me a name at random and one that complies with a theme and I'll go with that.

Six 23 Posted August 14, 2007 Hey CP - as none of my picks have had the decency to depart this world, could I just have all the same people again? If so, should I email you the list, or is this post enough to secure my entry... ?

I'd support your idea if you were to take the names from previous deathlists so that they were people who others have regarded as genuine contenders in the past. In that case a clean sheet might justify a smidgin of self-congratulation at the year end.

I'd support your idea if you were to take the names from previous deathlists so that they were people who others have regarded as genuine contenders in the past. In that case a clean sheet might justify a smidgin of self-congratulation at the year end. I have been thinking of doing the opposite of a deathpool, ie a livepool. Each player selects a team of old and/ or desperately unhealthy well known people, and is awarded points at the start of the year on the basis of their age and severity of their illness(es). They lose points each time one of them dies. Winner is the player with the most points. So instead of rooting for them to die, we'll be hoping for them to survive the year (a bit like you do when you haven't picked someone who is top of the obituary writer's list). Canadian Paul's list of I&P's would be a good starting point for a list of candidates, for example. Only trouble is, working out the points scoring is so complicated and subjective, I can't see myself ever bothering to get it done, let alone buy myself a domain, learn HTML coding, attract enough players... Canadian Paul 97 Posted August 14, 2007 MPFC: I was a bit unsure at first, but Monoclinc clenched it for you. That one's going on my shortlist for the Monkey's next year. Yes, that would be fine and, if you are going to make a go of it, that will help me a lot if you win the Theme Team since people will know what your team is and won't pick (since you get first dibs). I also like Godot's suggestion about it too, just for the record, but you're obviously free to go either way. Mono: The rules aren't that complicated, it's basically one ordinary team and one theme team and you must have one Canadian on your ordinary team. The reason the rules are so extensive is because I try to make it so that there are no loopholes in the rules. I know many of the players are a clever bunch, so I have to spell it all out or risk someone gaining an unfair-fair advantage. When writing them, I kept thinking to myself "If I were Tempus Fugit and I were entering a Theme in this competition." Six: Nope, that post is enough I still have your file... er... on file. P.S. We miss you, come back. Rick: I like that idea. There's always a few candidates each year that everyone thinks is going to die and I say to myself "boy, they're way off base." Might be a bit of stretch, but I could probably come up with ten. Surely last year if this had existed, big points could have been scored by anyone who guessed that Harold Pinter would survive to the end of 2006.
maryportfuncity 10,657 Posted August 14, 2007 Reet first dibs on the theme team - i.e. people I think will see Sept 08 though they'll doubtless be other's deadpool picks along the way. I'll stick with the 7 suggested so far so I'm lining up: Pete Doherty Amy Winehouse Whitney Houston Robert Mugabe Hamad Karzai (I'll check this spelling before submitting the final list) Pervez Marsharrif (spelling likewise) Edward Upward Which gives me a day or two to find a Canadian contender and some other candidates, for which I'm after some very old people. I'm trying to find at least one Cumbrian who fits the profile, not easy though frail former England and Carlisle United legend Ivor Broadis might be a contender. The livepool lives, or summat. Just for the record, you don't necessarily need a Canadian on your Theme Team. Also, the way you've phrased your team technically breaks the rules (subjectivity and verifiability) but I can rephrase it so that it does - so search on. By the way, I have a somewhat general question for all of you loyal subjects of the Queen. I want to include the New York Times in my list of acceptable obituary sources, since some of the more interesting and artsy people that wouldn't get a mainstream obit might have a better chance in that publication. So my question is, what is the closest that the UK's got to the New York Times in terms of a paper that's more likely to print obituaries of people who are significant, yet not mainstream? I'm not a loyal subject of the Queen, but my guess is The Times & The Independent are both very similiar, maybe The Telegraph too. NOT the Guardian. Must finish.. ahem.. start my packing for my immiment departure.
maryportfuncity 10,657 Posted August 14, 2007 Re the obscurities, arties and academic ones deffo The Independent. Just ask Lindsey Hughes, oh - wait a minute - she's dead, they ran her obit, mind.
Canadian Paul 97 Posted August 16, 2007 Updated to reflect the death of Brooke Astor, putting Maryport in first place in the Theme Team category with half a month to go. I'm leaning towards The Independent as my second obituary source. Also, just one more vote before I can announce the bonus point winners for the Theme Teams. maryportfuncity 10,657 Posted August 16, 2007 CP apologies for the post here but your inbox still refuses to budge. Did I just earn 5 points for Ms Astor? I'd mistakenly reckoned on 6 5 death 1 female 1 unique pick less 1 over 84 Is she docked another for famous for being famous?

With all due credit to her philanthropy, she is just a socialite, a very very rich socialite. I don't think that one point really changes much. If FF gets another hit it won't help you, if he doesn't, you're still ahead of him. Canadian Paul 97 Posted August 28, 2007 The results for the Theme Team Bonus Points are in and the votes were tied five ways. (Perhaps next year, more voters will be order) To solve the problem a secret, mystery judge that had not previously voted decided on three of the five. Therefore five bonus points go to: Captain's Log James Bond Stars Mad as Hatters Congratulations! In a coincidence that's happy for all, neither of these three teams have scored yet in the CPDP, so at least no one will go home empty-handed. In other news, I have decided on The Independent as the British companion to the New York Times and, beginning next year, both of these sources will be acceptable for Ordinary Team obituaries. Finally, don't forget to get those entries in if you plan to enter!
Six 23 Posted August 28, 2007 Excellent stuff CP!!! My first ever points in a deadpool.... I'm so proud. The fact that I got those points out of pity, rather than in the conventional way, doesn't bother me at all. I'm past the starting post now. There's no stopping me. I'm on my way..... Windsor 2,233 Posted August 28, 2007 I'm not going to trawl through this thread so I will just ask the questions. 1) When does the next competition start? 2)If you put someone in your theme team, can they be in your normal team? I may have asked these last year. I can't really remember.

So one person in your theme team can be in your normal team as well.
