Ferenc Puskás,born in 1927 the legendary Hungarian Footballer, is almost certain to die during 2006. His family have just put all his medals and memorobilia up for sale to pay for his continuing care for advanced Alzheimers.

 

He was injured and did not play a part in the infamous "Battle of Berne" during the 1954 World Cup. This did not stop the Brazilians stabbing him with a broken

bottle during the post match punch up. A superb all round player - better than Best in my opinion. The national stadium in Hungary is named after him.

I didn't realise Puskas was stil alive. One of the finest European footballers, one of the stars of Hungary's 1950's side (the greatest team never to lift the world cup?). It's sad that he's apparently fading, but it's gotta happen sometime.

I think he should pass the fame test. He is quite well known in the UK as he scored

3 of the 6 goals Hungary put past England in 1954, the first time England were beaten on home soil.

I remember that last year his family sold all his medals to pay for ongoing care. It has to be said that it looks bleak - don't bet on the nine days.

Of course he passes the fame test; The General, a central part of the Mighty Magyars of

the 1950s and the all-conquering Real Madrid team of the late 50s.

Television still show footage of Hungary's epochal performance against England in 1953.

I think it was Puskas who scored a wonderful goal that day (dragging the ball past a bewildered

England defender before blasting it into the net in the same movement).

I hope he doesn't die, well at least not this year. But if he does die this year. How did we miss DDT's suggestion to put him on the list when looking at the 50 that were chosen at least half should not be considered for a couple of years.

It will be a real shame when he does die. Such a great player with a true talent and didn't possess an over-inflated ego like so many football players today.

He's been courting some kind of collapse for a while since he's packing some serious pork and has been for a while but was still prone to rapid sprints and shimmies in charity games well into his late fifties.
