Emlyn Hughes

In case this chap has slipped through your net, Emlyn Hughes, former Liverpool and England soccer captain from the 70s has brain cancer, which is almost always fatal. A good bet for next year I reckon. WDYT?

Not much info around about Emlyn since his operation in Sept and subsequent radiotherapy

Maybe he'll opt for the Barry Sheen approach of a homeopathic cure for cancer B)

More moans from me I'm afraid. But dear old Emlyn Hughes really should have been on the list, may I suggest. As I pointed out during the year, he has brain cancer. The survival rate over an 18 month period (which would take us to the end of 2004) is just 42 per cent. So there is almost a 60 per cent certainly that the ex-England soccer captain will be kicking off, so to speak. I think he has the potential to embarrass us with a rather rapid demise.

Well Arnold theres no doubt you made a strong case from Emlyn. Im starting to think that the beverages at the DeathList committee meeting were a little on the strong side as Im not sure there was a suitably vigourous case made for Mr Hughes.

So its looks like this year for the first time we're actually hoping for a few key survivors - Emyln Hughes, Patrick Moore and Maggie Thatcher. The demise of any of those in 2004 is going to lead to a rather messy inquest into DeathList committee procedures!

UPDATE

A half page article about Emlyn appeared in the Daily Mail on Friday Feb 6 2004.

I highlight the following points from the text for your information.

- The 56 year old was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year after collapsing at the end of a charity football match.

- He has had 5 hours of surgery and a course of radiotherapy in an attempt to shrink the growth.

- He now faces chemotherapy but has pledged to fight the disease for the sake of his family (This kind of fighting talk usually means its worse than its made out to be).

- The treatment has stopped the growth of the cancer (but not killed it off).

- Simon Rogers, cancer specialist at the Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery said: "Patients are not given aggressive chemotherapy unless they really need it. With brain cancer the cure rate is not particularly good."

Can I just congratulate Arnold on his original information from way back in November. The Daily Mail seemed to think they had a scoop yesterday.

DWB

DWB: I saw the same article. Of course, I didn't buy The Daily Mail, rather peered over somebody else's shoulder, if you like. I could make out the big picture as Emyln and incase I couldn't there was a 72pt square serif font headline as a backup.

Top work from Arnold.

Emlyn was interviewed during the Grand National coverage on tv last week. He had a horse running I think. Anyway, not too much about his cancer was said, although he did say that he was feeling OK at the moment. He didn't look too bad either. I think there is a bit more life left in the squeaky ex-footballer yet.

DWB

Good old Crazy Horse. Still fighting away despite the odds. Glad he beat Cloughy though. Now he really was a miserable old twit.

I remember Cloughy slagging off the Liverpool supporters who had died at Hillsborough whilst his son was still playing for them. Nice one Dad - why dont you tell a wheelcap joke aswell.

Anyway the old soak will have 92 rather pissed off scousers waiting for him at the pearly gates. Good luck young man.

Well, i've bollocked a few of them up here for not enforcing the offside rule and for not having short back and sides like their mothers told them to. I often said that God laid down grass for the football to be passed on, but, sh*t, theres absolutely none of the stuff up here, so some of my teams will have to go the aerial route. Being dead is not all that bad lads.

Word is that Emlyn Hughes has gone.

Not many people I would say this about, but good riddance.

Heh, I notice that 7th in the Google list is a link to a download of his actually-not-bad-for-its-time football 8-bit computer game, the brilliantly titled Emlyn Hughes International Soccer, a game which I'm sure ol' Crazy Horse never even touched (beyond holding the box up in the ad photos). I'd say it's wrorth a play, out of respect for the old geezer, if this was 1989. But it's not, and as we all know, playing old computer games is one of the most disappointing experiences going. However at the time, I used to play out complete FA Cup tournaments using that software - hats off to the man for a good licence...
