Dead Poets Society

Recommended Posts

Sorting through a pile of books I had in storage, I came across one I really enjoyed: A Serial Biography (1977) by Tom Raworth.  ‘Is he alive?’ a proper DLer immediately wondered.

In fact he isn’t.  Sadly overlooked by everyone, in particular our entire U.K. membership, Raworth died of cancer 8 Feb 2017.
So this is better late than never.

As per Wiki, Raworth was an English-Irish poet, publisher, editor, and teacher who published over 40 books of poetry and prose during his life. Raworth was a key figure in the British Poetry Revival.

I can’t speak to his oeuvre, but I recommend the aforementioned short novel (see photo)

But who's the best dead-today-at-101 poet?

Fight! Fight!! FIGHT!!!

Bonnet's wiki page was created after his death, so he was quite a nobody. I'd say there is no fight with Larry.

Ferlinghetti must have been one of the last survivors of the Beat Generation?

Probably the second last big name of that group. Gary Snyder is not only the oldest now, turning 91 this year, but also the last prominent one. He was a favourite of Ferlinghetti himself.

Wiki lists 92 individuals between its categories "Beat Generation writers" and "Beat Generation poets". Of them 14 are still alive. However, maybe half of those are more so "associates" of the core Beat Generation so depends how you define it I guess.

Some good potential for the Scrabble thread in the posts above, however none of the deceased poets make the final cut.
