Ideas and possibilities for 2008

Recommended Posts

Rushdie splits the cabinet. I'm guessing those arguing in favour of withdrawing the knighthood have suffered through one or more of his books. And those suggesting suicide attacks might be forthcoming would like to talk to us.

Ron Ely, 69 today. Seems more appropriate here than the ideas and possibilities. Once notably strong and healthy and now a successful writer. He'll probably cark it around 104 years old.

Not sure if he's already been mentioned, but having read over the wiki page of the Thai guy trying to buy Manchester City (ex PM Thickskin Shinawatra), I'd say he's more likely to die in 2008 than to be the new Blues owner.

If he should move back to Thailand before year end then he'll be up for debate at the Committee meeting.

John Hick a philosopher, is 85 this year though admittly still seems fairly active, writing articles on his website as recently as April. I'm only aware of him because we used some his books at school but I'm assured he is rather famous.

Good spot Ize; obviously the 'school' in question is one performing well in the league tables and you are a credit to the place. Yer man would be a broadsheet obit for sure, meaning points aplenty on the easier scoring deadpools.

Another night, another ecclesiastical offering. :)

Archbishop Christodoulos, head of the Greek Orthodox Church, is in intensive care following intestinal surgery. Doctors have revealed he is also suffering from a "chronic liver complaint". One to keep an eye on. Fine beard as well.

His Wiki page makes it very clear he is not a fan of reality TV shows

"He led protests in 2002 against Greece's version of the television programme Big Brother, urging followers to "pray for the young kids" on the shows and to "turn off our [television] sets"

He has cancer in the large intestine and the liver. Now he really is closer to God.

According to his Wiki entry Bing Crosby has two surviving older brothers and two surviving sisters. Assuming this is true that means four siblings all over 100 years old.

Great entry to read and it seems well sourced. Good twist in the tale that he left a fortune to his sons from his first marriage but they could only get the money after their 80th birthdays. None of them made it.

Re Everett and the other siblings; does anyone know if they're still breathing?

So they don't list deaths for the famous brothers - Bing and Bob - both of whom are goners (1977 and 1993 respectively).

I've put Wiki right on three they suggested were still on the go. Is Mary Rose still alive, then?

George Robert is Bob, and Bing's date of death is listed elsewhere in the article. I can't find a date of death for Mary Rose but I haven't stopped looking. :D

On the subject of famous siblings, Marilyn Monroe's half sister is still alive and in her late eighties. There's bound to be some interest when she dies. Probably not famous enough for DL but might be a good DDP pick.

We've mentioned him before but Mikhail Kalashnikov remains alive. More than can be said for many who have tasted the business end of the assault rifle he's famous for inventing.

sh*t, sorry guys, wrong thread could a mod - like - move this to the ideas and possibles?

Yeah, well if the mods won't move the above I'll get it on the right thread. Yer man Kalashnikov, who's not getting royalties on anything up to 100 million rifles, reckons he'd have been better off inventing the lawnmower.

Ah, the lawnmower, such an important cog in the war machine...

Half a league half a league,

Half a league onward,

All in the valley of Death

Rode the six hundred:

'Forward, the Light Brigade!

Charge for the guns' he said:

Into the valley of Death

Rode the six hundred

On their lawnmowers.

'Forward, the Light Brigade!'

Was there a man dismay'd ?

Not tho' the soldier knew

Some one had blunder'd:

Theirs not to make reply,

Theirs not to reason why,

Theirs but to do & die,

Into the valley of Death

Rode the six hundred

On some lovely John Deere X110 side discharge/mulching lawn tractors.

Cannon to right of them,

Cannon to left of them,

Cannon in front of them

Volley'd & thunder'd;

Storm'd at with shot and shell,

Boldly they rode and well,

Into the jaws of Death,

Into the mouth of Hell

Rode the six hundred

Trusty Flymos at their side.

Flash'd all their sabres bare,

Flash'd as they turn'd in air

Sabring the gunners there,

Charging an army while

All the world wonder'd:

Plunged in the battery-smoke

Right thro' the line they broke;

Cossack & Russian

Reel'd from the sabre-stroke,

Shatter'd & sunder'd.

Then they rode back, but not

Not the six hundred,

As their mowers had conked out.

Cannon to right of them,

Cannon to left of them,

Cannon behind them

Volley'd and thunder'd;

Storm'd at with shot and shell,

While horse & hero fell,

They that had fought so well

Came thro' the jaws of Death,

Back from the mouth of Hell,

All that was left of them,

Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?

O the wild charge they made!

All the world wonder'd.

Honour the charge they made!

Honour the Light Brigade,

Noble six hundred Black and Decker GLC2500 Reflex Strimmer heroes!

George McCorkle, guitarist and founder member of the Marshall Tucker Band, has lung cancer. His website doesn't make very promising reading at all. He might be lucky to get to the weekend, let alone 2008, but we shall see. :)

He might not pass the famousness test.

Won't make much odds that test, mind. Don't see him DP picked, don't see him lasting to 2008. Time for that old Nightride Home, eh?

I know he's not really famous, but too much inactivity on this thread makes me nervous and twitchy :P

Guest Marshall P Nut

Seems like the MTB have had about 30 past and present members, none of whom are called Marshall, Tucker or Marshall Tucker. I'll bet quite a few are dead, mind.

Charlie Wolf - the former Talk Radio presenter is suffering from kidney cancer. His show used to be from 1am to 6am - from the graveyard shift to the graveyard?

According to "Totally Jewish.com", he now writes for The Jewish Times and has a spot on 'Shalom FM'
