Gambia's Vice-President Badara Alieu Joof has died of illness in India, President Adama Barrow said on Tuesday.

Joof, 65, was appointed vice president of the West African country in 2022. He had previously served as education minister.

Abdessalam Jalloud, Libya's Prime Minister 1972-1977, one of the last living of the group of officers who overthrew the monarchy and once Gaddafi's right-hand man, involved in some dissident killings, disappearances et cetera, apparently lives in some European country now(probably Italy?) here's an image that's allegedly from this or last month.

Wade, a despot ? He ran for President 4 times before he was elected, at 74, having waited 25 years. 
And when he lost to ran for a third term, he retired.

Joseph Lagu (1931-) I've mentioned him before here as he was the leader of Anyanya in the 70s. Wife died in London from covid a while ago, Lagu survived. President of the High Executive Council for a year, 1978-1979.

Abel Alier Kwai met current South Sudan president/dictator Salva Kiir Mayardit (you might remember SKM from when he pissed himself in December and the journalist who filmed it mysteriously died a while later) late last year and could stand without aid while Mayardit used a cane. He'll be 90 in two months. Joseph Lagu met Mayardit in January and looked fine for his age, that is either 92 or 94 this year (some sources say he was born 26 Nov 1929, some 21 Nov 1931). He's also made appearances since.

Impressive they're both still alive as it seems their political careers peaked in the 1970s and South Sudan's had more than 45 years of wars, civil wars and other conflicts since 1955.

I’ve noticed that those past twenty years, a lot of African head of states died nonagerians or have currently reach 90 :

Tunisian Habib Bourguiba died at 96, Senegalese Léopold Sédar Senghor 95, Algerian Amhed Ben Bella 95, Zimbabwean Robert Mugabe 95, Kenyan Daniel Arap Moi 95, Egyptian Hosni Mubarak 91 and Tunisian Beji Caid Essebsi died in office aged 92. Cameroonian Paul Biya is 90

They have outlived a lot of Western head of states, which, given their countries life expectancy, should be the opposite.

Article on Marcel Niat Njifenji from April. It's behind a paywall but says he's been very ill for some time now and regularly hospitalised (He's known to have spent months in France for treatment in 2018 and 2020). Yet he was re-elected as President of the Senate early this year.

Seems to have been a shitty ruler. In December 1999 he was ousted by Robert Guéï (1941-2002, later killed along with his wife, children and former interior minister during the first hours of the First Ivorian Civil War by forces lead by 4th President Laurent Gbagbo (b. 1945) and war criminal Charles Blé Goudé (b. 1972) who were both freed by ICC last month: we'll see what happens to them next)
