Former Irish & Lions back Tom Kiernan has died age 83. Captained Ireland 24 times in 54 appearances, and captained the Lions on their 1968 tour of South Africa.

Former Bok back HO de Villiers has died aged 76. He played 14 tests between 1967 & 70, the last being against Wales at Cardiff Arms Park, in which he scored a penalty in a losing effort. Its reported he underwent surgery for a brain tumour last year.

Former Argentina rugby player Federico Aramburu was killed in Paris early Saturday, the Paris prosecutor's office said. He was 42.

Prosecutors confirmed to The Associated Press that a murder investigation has been opened.

Tony Brown, the Australian rugby player who was the first captain of Pennrith, has died. He was 86. So, not the referee Tony Brown. Not the cricketer Tony Brown. Not even the New Zealand rugby player of more recent vintage Tony Brown.

Former Ulster and South Africa rugby player Pedrie Wannenburg has died at the age of 41, after a car accident in Texas.

The retired back row forward was killed when a teenager led police on a high-speed chase and crashed into the back of Wannenburg's car at an intersection, according to local media.

His wife and two children were in the vehicle with him but did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

Wannenburg, 41, played 20 times for the Springboks between 2002 and 2007, and was close to being selected for the World Cup-winning squad in France.

Legendary former Springbok captain Dawie de Villiershas died at the age of 81.

De Villiers' family said in a statement he died at his house in Stellenbosch on Saturday night. He had been ill for some time.

In his final Test, De Villiers captained the Springboks to a 20-17 win over the All Blacks at Ellis Park - a result that secured a famous 3-1 series win.

At provincial level, De Villiers played for Boland, Western Province and Transvaal (now Lions).

He was also an ordained minister in the Dutch Reformed Church and a renowned politician.

Former Sharks star Nathan Stapleton has been told he is paralysed from the shoulders down.

It was confirmed this week he had fractured his neck while playing country rugby union in NSW.

The Daily Telegraph first reported Stapleton has now been given the heartbreaking news he is a quadriplegic.

The 32-year-old has damaged his spinal cord at the C4 level of his cervical vertebrae, Stapleton's family confirmed in a statement posted on a new Go Fund Me page.
