Buffoon as I recall, one of those patronising clowns that should have been smothered at birth.

Callaghan was a good Prime Minister under some very difficult circumstances, should be a pretty big funeral.

Jim became the oldest ever ex-PM today, overtaking how old Harold MacMillan when he died...

Perhaps time for him to bow out...

Jimbo is indeed the longest lived ex-PM as I wrote elsewhere in this forum.

I did not know there was a thread on him as when I searched I did not use his Sunday Best monicker.

I believe Jim Callaghan has been dead from the neck up since at least 1960! ;)

To quote Jim:

"Crisis, what crisis?"

At least he was a real Labour man. Not like the arrogant buffoon in Number 10 at the moment.

Audrey, Lady Callaghan of Cardiff died yesterday aged 89. The Callaghans were married for 66 years.

I seem to recall their daughter married Peter Jay the British ambassador to the USA.

Should the title of this thread not be: "James, Lord Callaghan, ex-PM"?

Yep, number 3 this year. Pity Prince Rainier isn't on this time (last time was 1997), as I suspect he's a gonner soon....

Well it looks like the old guy managed to beat the Pope and Prince Rainer.

The only place he's still alive is this site. C'mon guys, get the red line up and claim VICTORY. I'll be devastated if I find you taking Easter off. Could've sworn death was at 24/7365 occupation.

He'll be getting fulsome tributes in the broadsheets tomorrow, which was more than he ever got in office. Guardian and Mirror aside, the press was vehemently anti-Labour in the 1970s. Now they tend to be seen as the lesser of two evils, except by the Mail and Express of course.

I think there should be a state funeral for Lord Callaghan, we haven't have a non-royal state funeral since Sir Winston Churchill's in 1965 and after that the next one was for the Queen Mother in 2002.

I think there should be a state funeral for Tony Blair sometime in the next few weeks as well.
