Hm, all I see is horse racing specialist posting obits for him. I’m starting to really doubt his obit chances...

The Toronto Sun has a blurb about the passing of Randy Romero (last item listed).  Not a full obit, but could maybe qualify for some pools.  Also gives hope for something more.  Would think ESPN will eventually post something.  Wouldn't help Derby Dead Pool QOs, though.

He was an unknown on Jan 1, why would anyone have had him DDP?  Regardless, he stood little chance of that.  Catching himself on fire a good story, maybe all he has.
Lafayette LA newsprint will have his obit (The Advocate).  One thing Acadiana loves is their jockeys (The Borel family there too in Catahoula).

He had some health issues known in recent years and he was a bit of a cult pick because of that, basically.

Aye, but nothing screaming time of the essence.  I can see a theme team pick.  But who picks such wild cards with only 20 selections in all the world?  People smarter than SirC obvs.

I just looked at the websites for ESPN, si.com (Sports Illustrated), and Fox Sports, went to their horse racing pages, and there is no mention of Romero's passing.  Dude was a Hall of Famer in his sport.  Really pathetic coverage by the sports media here in the U.S., not that this surprises me.

In fairness, horse racing isn't a sport in the US. It's kinda the equivalent of that Welsh ice hockey player from a few years ago that carked it.

It is popular in the UK though, so I would have thought the Daily Mail might oblige since it likes US sports people (or "athletes" as they are all called in America).

To be fair, there are plenty of UK jockeys that would not get an obit either.

The US will be no different to ours, he wasn't Shoemaker or Secretariat. :D

UGH!

The Advocate is the Baton Rouge paper (my brain lapse) https://www.theadvocate.com/acadiana/news/article_5edf78fa-ca9d-11e9-bade-73438e4d656b.html

The Daily Advertiser is the paper in Lafayette (and basically Acadiana).

https://www.theadvertiser.com/story/news/2019/08/29/horse-jockey-randy-ragin-cajun-romero-died-louisiana-evangeline-downs/2153330001/

Plenty of horse racing links as well as ESPN.

Oh I know, but he had an incident-packed career.

"In the mid 1980s, Randy Romero moved to New York. He became the regular rider of Hall of Fame horses such as Go For Wand and Personal Ensign. During his reign in New York, he had a dramatic win in the 1988 Breeders Cup Distaff, one of his three Breeders Cup wins."

I still have to believe a NYTimes obit is forthcoming.  They take upwards of a week at times to catch up.  But as noted, in the USofA, in the past 80 years horse racing was binned in favour of boxing, which was binned in favour of the primary sports, first baseball--but 'football' (our version) is king now and for the foreseeable future.  Jockeys and horse racing is niche.  "Hall of Fame' jockeys may as well be aligned with my Hall of Fame Tractor Pull guy I fielded in 2018 DL Cup.  We honestly pay no attention.  It's like asking an American who is leading the points in F1 racing.  *crickets*

Fucks sake, that's him, McIlvanney and Atiyah all on that theme team because "they looked frail in BBC stuff last year", and all 3 of them could have been that sought after "first unique hit for Pan Breed". Sods law.

Tip for folk btw - "folk who look frail on BBC documentaries" is a great source of DDP action, clearly.

Only days before two of the biggest events on its schedule, Santa Anita on Tuesday suspended racing at least through this weekend — the announcement coming hours after the 21st horse fatality at the track since Dec. 26.

“In whole, we feel confident in the track and we're just being very proactive,” said Tim Ritvo, chief operating officer of the Stronach Group, which owns and operates Santa Anita. “We want to do all the testing that needs to be done. When we believe we're in good shape, we'll start to train over it again.”  The move will force the postponement of the Santa Anita Handicap, a lucrative race for older horses, and the San Felipe Handicap, a major prep race for 3-year-olds trying to qualify for the Kentucky Derby. Both were scheduled for Saturday.

The fatalities became very public less than two weeks ago when two horses, including 2017 Breeders’ Cup winner Battle Of Midway, died while training on a Saturday morning. Since then, two horses have died during training and one during racing.

Can we keep this thread to humans and notable horses, please?

There are hundreds of racehorses in training within a few miles radius of where I live.  I daresay most weeks one or two die of some illness or misadventure.  Shit happens.  They are delicate creatures.

I will conclude this thread at calendar year's end, marking one year since the start of the death count, as per the original story.  With any luck, this will have been the last entry and no more horses will die, making your request a moot point.
