Making a choice between cycling and his life cycle.

David Smith update - still here, after 10 years with cancer. His most recent results were good but he reflects on the unpredictability of his scans.

An article on Emile Idee, 100, who is the oldest living Tour De France stage winner, having triumphed in 1949.

Quote

But soon enough he is back up, scurrying around his living room. At one point he pulls out an entire drawer of newspaper and magazine clippings, as he searches for written proof of details he cannot recall. Walking it over to a corner, he then sets the weighty drawer down on a step. He bends over with uncanny flexibility and strength that belie his 100 years, and then return to examine another drawer. “Don’t worry about that,” he says. “We can get back to it later.”

Dutch cyclist, Fabio Jakobsen, in critical condition after horrific crash today during Tour of Poland.

It was a deliberate push and an added elbow just to make sure.

Yeah, and...

"The UCI, which considers the behaviour unacceptable, immediately referred the matter to the disciplinary commission to request the imposition of sanctions commensurate with the seriousness of the facts."

Jumbo-Visma said: "Our thoughts go out to Fabio Jakobsen and other people involved in today's terrible crash in the Tour of Poland - crashes like these should not happen.

"We offer our sincere apologies and we will discuss internally what has happened before we may make any further statement."

The podium ceremony was cancelled and the results of the 195.8km stage from Stadion Slaski have not been released.

If my idea's shit come back with a better one; they find a fairground cannon used for firing people (plenty of these machines lying idle in lockdown so should be easy) and as a fitting punishment fire Groenewegen through the advertising hoardings at his next big race charging the lucky advertiser who gets their hoarding shredded extra for the unique exposure!

BBC now reporting a mortified Groenewegen has apologized.

Now it's up to everyone else to calm down and avoid near-death experiences at the finish line.

Here's a preview of tomorrow's stage:

Facial surgery for Jakobsen - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/53671028

And out of the coma now. But still pretty roughed up (obviously).

According to a media in Belgium, he broke ALL face bones and lost all his teeth. But no vital organs were seriously injured.

Christian Prudhomme, the Director of the Tour de France has tested positive for Covid. Four staff members from four separate teams have also tested positive. Riders all seem fine at the moment. https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/tour-de-france-director-christian-prudhomme-positive-for-coronavirus/

I think the French President was in his car on Saturday so a possible transfer due to proximity.

Huge crash for Chloe Dygert just now whilst leading today's UCI World Championships Time Trial into Imola.

Update - Dygert is reported as being 'conscious and talking'. Having seen a repeat of the incident it looked serious - front wheel puncture/failure, leading to a crash over an Armco crash barrier and into a ditch.

Back on his bike!

Apparently Jakobsen broke every bone in his face and lost all but one of his teeth in the crash.

Couple of lesser-known (to the general public and, frankly, me) American cyclists killed in car crashes - one while riding and one while driving:

Cyclo-cross legend (it says here) Laurence Malone.

Masters (ie old) national champ Gwen Inglis.

(Also, I very much enjoyed today's 'white gravel' stage in the Giro d'Italia) @DevonDeathTrip

Yes, me too.  About time that young upstart Remco was taken down a peg or two.

It's Bernal's to lose, but I predict Lanky Hugh Carthy will do something special in the mountains.
