harrymcnallysblueandwhitearmy 1,698 Posted September 1, 2007 If we can have football, cricket, ruggerbuggers and baseball (hell, even wrasslin') threads, I don't see why there shouldn't be a US football version. These guys are always doing drugs, shooting and raping people, organising dogfights etc, so there should be plenty of DL action for them. And we have our fair share of transatlantic members to consider, don't forget. To get the ball rolling, today saw the college football equivalent of Carlisle (or summat) beating Man Utd, as tiny Appalachian State downed mighty Michigan in one of the biggest shocks ever. No-one died, though.Go Pack, go Badgers!Edit: on reflection, this is unfair on Carlisle. A more accurate example would be Man Utd losing to the bobbins robins of Altrincham.
Madame Defarge 21 Posted September 2, 2007 Linebacker Bill 'Romo' Romanowski is on my CPDP theme team 'Nothing in Moderation', basically because he's sustained a whopping 20 (documented) concussions and because he's injected himself with a staggering amount of just about everything including the cells from Scottish sheep and a special steroid cocktail called 'the clear' because it could not be detected in tests. Of course, he's written a book about it. I saw a re-run of the 60 Minutes interview and noticed how his eyes kinda glazed over as he described the popping sound made by someone's finger when he broke it.

Canadian Paul 97 Posted September 11, 2007 Didn't know that there was a thread for this. Anyhow, Kevin Everett, Buffalo Bills player, has sustained a life-threatening spinal cord injury. Not to mention, as we saw with Christopher Reeves, that paralytics are not conducive to long life, unless you're basically a robot like Stephen Hawkings. Mike Utley, the other player that the make reference to, is supposedly doing fine. Edit: Didn't realize that 'arry had posted the same thing. In my defense, however, the title of the link has nothing to do with the story.
football_fan 42 Posted September 14, 2007 NFL Commissioner Goodell Penalizes the New England Patriots NEW YORK (AP) -- New England coach Bill Belichick was fined the NFL maximum of $500,000 Thursday and the Patriots were ordered to pay $250,000 for spying on an opponent's defensive signals. Commissioner Roger Goodell also ordered the team to give up next year's first-round draft choice if it reaches the playoffs and second- and third-round picks if it doesn't.
Banshees Scream 110 Posted September 14, 2007 NFL Commissioner Goodell Penalizes the New England Patriots Hard time for them right there. Anyway moving on ... Michael Vick is expected 12 to 18 months in jail for letting dogs kill each other and an amazing story 'Kevin Everett' is not paralyzed after doctors assumed he would never walk again. What a story, it must be like winning the lottery for him.

Save it for the rest of the league.

deadsox 894 Posted September 30, 2007 American Football is so very boring.Thats a polite observation. Thanks for your polite observation, Lord. The fact of the matter is that "boring" is a word that usually goes with either a lack of understanding or having no dog in the fight (excuse me Mr. Vick). Many Americans consider your football (our soccer) to be boring merely because they really don't understand the finer points of the game. The same can be said for many who find baseball boring. American football is a lot of fun to watch if you know what you're looking at and have a rooting interest. The New England Patriots would be a good start for a rooting interest. If that doesn't appeal to you, there's always your local bookie and the point spread.

Banshees Scream 110 Posted September 30, 2007 Next year this, next year that. Competition wears many masks, but it only has a few faces. Motivation, knowledge and self belief. For the masters and the professionals it only matters when they fail, victory is just another colorful day. After all the money a franchise spends on their staff and their players, after it all it means f****n nothing. It's unbelievable.

If that doesn't appeal to you, there's always your local bookie and the point spread. Thats a fair point Sir. I have, in my youth, played both the American and British versions of Football ( the Brit one to a high standard) Softball ( which, excuse my ignorance, I assume to be loosely based on Baseball) and Rugby. I can say, with a degree of understanding, that American Football is less interesting to Play and watch than Rugby and Rugby falls well behind "Soccer" on both counts, though not always. Softball ( Baseball) is barely an adult sport, an opinion which will no doubt anger many but to temper this I will hold up Cricket as being bloody awful. Each to their own, each to their own. A win for New England will probably mean a bye and home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Im sorry to say that our wonderful Education system is turning out Kids that can barely Read or Write and would be hard pressed to find their own Country on a map. We laugh no more. The Four Horsemen 26 Posted October 29, 2007 Well, I was in attendance at Wembley yesterday and I'm pleased to report that the popularity stakes were as follows: 1) Lewis Hamilton 2) Martin Johnson 3) The Miami Cheerleaders 4) The streaker 5) The Feeling 6) The Dolphins team 7) The Giants team 8) The military marching band at halftime 9) The Mexican Wave 10) John Terry My personal favourite moment was John Terry getting simultaneously booed by 80,000 people, nicely juxtaposed between the huge cheers for Martin Johnson and Lewis Hamilton! I think there was an American Football match in there somewhere as well......
