Summer Olympic Deaths/Dead Medallists

David Bárcena Ríos, Mexican pentathlete (1964, 1968 Olympics) and equestrian (1972, 1976, 1980 Olympics) has died aged 77. He won bronze in the equestrian Team Three-Day Event during the 1980 Moscow Olympics, his fifth time at the Games.

Upon thinking about it, Roger Bannister's still alive at 87, and has had Parkinsons for 5 years. Might be a good pick in a few years if he's still around?

Dudley Storey, New Zealand rower who won gold in the coxed four (1968 Mexico Olympics) and silver in the coxless eight (1972 Munich Olympic), has died aged 77. No cause of death yet, but he had reportedly just been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

Bill Hougland, basketball player with Kansas University and the Phillips 66ers of the National Industrial Basketball League, and two-time gold medallist at the Olympics (1952 Helsinki and 1956 Melbourne, men's basketball) has died aged 86. He also served as vice president for Koch Industries and president of Koch Oil before his retirement in 1991.

Former speed skater Yukinori Miyabe succumbed to cancer aged 48.  The Japanese skater was a bronze medal winner in the 1000 meter race at the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France. At the same games he was ninth in the 1500 meter race and 18th in the 500 meter race.

Yelena Naimushina, a Russian gymnast who competed for the Soviet Union at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and was part of the gold medal winning team, has died aged 53.

Dutch cyclist Leo Peelen died unexpectedly at the age of 48. He was a silver medal winner at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Shot-putter and personality Brian Oldfield (USA) has died aged 71.

 

Finished 6th in the '72 event, turned pro, got back his amateur status for the '80 Olympics only to miss out because of the US boycott.

 

Notable also for developing the spinning throw, rather than the conventional 'glide' across the circle, he was known to smoke between throws, wear 'unconventional' attire whilst competing, and also appeared in Playgirl.

Interesting (to my tiny brain) that the Wiki link has an image of a stamp from Paraguay with him on it.  Why the HELL would Paraguay have a stamp with a German gold medal winner?
